KU product Keith has ailing wrist

Charlton Keith has been itching to prove his worth in the NFL.

But he’s going to have to wait a little longer.

Keith, a former Kansas University standout, was held out of the Cleveland Brown’s first rookie minicamp this weekend because of a wrist injury. Keith failed a physical, though an X-ray and MRI on his wrist showed no serious damage.

“I just talked to coach (Romeo) Crennel, and he said that I couldn’t do anything at practice because they didn’t want it to get injured more,” Keith said.

Keith said he wasn’t released by the Browns, but will have to wait until the team’s next rookie minicamp to get started.

That will be once college classes wrap up in a few weeks.

“They talked to my agent and myself and told me once everything is good with my wrist, I can come back,” he said.

Undrafted during last weekend’s seven-round NFL Draft, Keith was a priority free-agent signing of the Browns, whose roster also features former Jayhawks David McMillan and Brandon Rideau.

Keith said he injured his wrist while training.

A routine physical the Browns conducted exposed the injury, and though there’s no significant damage to the wrist, Cleveland officials decided to hold him back.

“A lot of medical issues,” Cleveland general manager Phil Savage told the Akron Beacon Journal. “He’s beat up, I guess. We couldn’t risk it.”
