Gonzaga is ranked fourth, George Washington sixth. Texas is eighth and North Carolina 10th. Anyone out there honestly believe Gonzaga and GW will combine for more tournament victories than Texas and North Carolina? Didn’t think so. The NCAA Tournament selection committee won’t use the rankings to determine seeds, and here’s guessing the Longhorns and Tar Heels will be seeded at least as high as the ‘Zags and Colonials.

Most of the teams in KU’s neighborhood in the poll lost as well last week, so the Jayhawks didn’t drop as far as they otherwise would have. Elsewhere, the most mystifyingly underachieving team in the nation, Michigan State, is 7-7 in the Big Ten, 2-6 on the road, and a loss from vanishing from the Top 25. Shannon Brown, Maurice Ager and Paul Davis are big-time talents. Why nine losses?

in the weekly Associated Press men’s basketball poll.
At the time this ballot was due Sunday night, Atlantic 10 teams were 0-30 against teams in the Top 25. Given that shocking futility figure, I considered bumping George Washington down several spots, but decided to keep the Colonials in the top 10. You can only beat the teams they put in front of you, and except for getting pounded by North Carolina State, George Washington has done that so far.

Still paying the price for being young in the preseason, stale against Kansas State, and not clutch at Missouri, KU didn’t make the rankings, placing 27th, one spot ahead of Bucknell.
Washington is 5-5 in the Pac-10, a worse conference than the Big 12, and is ranked 21st.
C.J. Giles doesn’t have a problem with not being ranked.
“I kind of like flying under the radar,” Giles said.
