Weights standout Sheldon Battle and 27 other Kansas University track and field athletes today and Saturday will be in Norman, Okla., for the NCAA Midwest Regional championships.

Battle, a junior-college transfer, was the leading scorer in last week’s Big 12 Outdoor championships after winning the hammer and the discus events and finishing second in the shot put.

Battle will compete in all three of his specialties this weekend at Oklahoma University’s track facility.

In women’s competition, KU will have two potential NCAA Outdoor qualifiers in the pole vault. Freshman Ekaterina Sultanova won the vault at the Big 12 Outdoor after a leap of 13-51/4, and senior teammate Amy Linnen is the defending NCAA Indoor champion. She has a best of 13-111/4.

The top five finishers in individual events will advance to the NCAA Outdoor. The top three relays will also advance.
