Columbia, Mo. ? Prior to Kansas University’s second women’s basketball game this season against archrival Missouri, KU coach Bonnie Henrickson played a quick game of “Where Were You When … ” with her Jayhawks.
KU’s women last swept the Tigers in 1999, and Henrickson wanted the Jayhawks to sense just how long ago that was.
“I asked ’em what they were doing in 1999, and most of them were sophomores in high school,” Henrickson said with a laugh.
They needn’t look back anymore.
KU bolted to an 18-2 lead and never let up in a 60-42 rout of Missouri on Saturday at Mizzou Arena. The Jayhawks beat Missouri, 63-61, on Jan. 22.
“They were two drastically different games,” Henrickson said. “Today, we got out to a big lead early and never gave in, where in that first one it was one possession, back and forth. We were down at the half last time.”
This one wasn’t close.
The Jayhawks (10-10 overall, 3-6 Big 12 Conference) hit 53.1 percent of their first-half field goals and held the Tigers to 20.8 percent. MU had just five field goals in the first half; Kansas had 17.
“We made shots early and defended well,” Henrickson said. “We took away some looks and did a great job adjusting from the first game.”
Kansas freshman Taylor McIntosh had a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Eight of McIntosh’s rebounds came on the offensive end.
Junior Kaylee Brown scored 15 points, while fellow junior Erica Hallman added 12 points. Senior Aquanita Burras netted nine points and added six rebounds.
“As a staff, we’re excited, and they’re excited,” Henrickson said. “It was a big conference win on the road, and they’re anxious to get another one.”
Curiously, the Jayhawks didn’t attempt a free throw all day. Missouri was 6-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Kansas was called for 13 fouls, MU for 11.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in a game where we didn’t shoot any free throws,” Henrickson said. “It’s ironic.”
Christelle N’Garsanet led Missouri with 12 points.
The Jayhawks will head Wednesday to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
