CASTLE ROCK, COLO. ? Former Kansas University golfer Matt Gogel is tied for 135th place after one rain-interrupted round of the The International.
For the year, the 34-year-old Gogel, has won $314,000 in 18 events.
He ranks 143rd out of 257 golfers on the money list.
The 1994 KU grad must finish in the top 125 at the end of the season to keep his PGA Tour card for next year. If he loses the card, he’ll have to requalify at Tour Qualifying School.
“He has missed a lot of cuts this year,” said KU golf coach Ross Randall, who coached Gogel during his years as a Jayhawk.
“The last I heard, he said he was really struggling with his wedge game. He switched clubs earlier in the year. He went with some older clubs and started playing better with those. He’s had about everything go wrong. I still think he’ll make it. He’s always played well at the end of the year to keep his exempt status.”
Gogel has finished in the top 100 on the money list five straight seasons. He has one career victory — the 2002 AT&T Pebble Beach Classic. His best finish this season was seventh at the Booz Allen Classic.
