KU tennis defeats K-State

The University of Kansas tennis team (3-8 overall, 2-1 Big 12) defeated No. 74 Kansas State (3-6 overall, 0-4 Big 12), 5-2 on Wednesday, March 17 at the Washburn Tennis Facility in Manhattan, Kan.

“I am so happy with this victory,” head coach Amy Hall said. “We played hard every single match like we needed to. I honestly feel like we are coming around and playing like the type of team that I know we are.”

The Jayhawks came out looking for revenge after last season’s loss to the Wildcats and took two of the three doubles matches, earning the doubles point. At the No. 1 spot, seniors Courtney Steinbock and Kristen Steinbock defeated Rosenberg and Castillejos, 8-3 while the other victory came from sophomore Christine Skoda and freshman Brittany Brown who beat McIver/Mickelson, 8-3 at the No. 3 position.

KU continued its sharp play in singles. Senior Emily Haylock won her match in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Jessica Simosa at the No. 2 slot while Skoda also needed three sets to dispose of Paulina Castillejos, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-1at the No. 3 position. Brown made quick work of her opponent, Hayley McIver, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot and freshman Ashley Filberth picked up her first singles win of the season, 6-2, 6-2 against Aveen Alkhatib at the No. 6 position.
