? Kansas University’s baseball team could not rally from a three-run deficit in the ninth inning, falling to Texas-Pan American, 8-6, Saturday night.

The Jayhawks (7-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, then pushed their advantage to 4-0 in the third when senior Ryan Baty drove in a run with single, and senior Matt Tribble had a two-run triple, KU’s first triple of the season.

After Kansas added a run in the fifth, the Broncs scored three to pull within 5-3.

KU senior starter Chris Smart, who suffered the loss, got out of a jam in the fifth, but left with the bases loaded in the sixth. Junior Mike Zagurski came on in relief and allowed two inherited runners to score before getting out of the inning.

With runners at first and third and two outs, KU junior Sean Richardson singled to drive in one, but Baty, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, could not come through.

Kansas will face Sam Houston State at noon today.

Softball

Tempe, Ariz. — Kansas split a pair of games at the Arizona Triangular — earning its first win of the season, 11-1, against Northwestern, but losing, 1-0, to No. 20 Arizona State.

In the first game, the Jayhawks took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back against the Wildcats.

Kara Pierce (1-1) allowed one run on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts to earn the complete-game victory. Serena Settlemier sizzled at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Destiny Frankenstein was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs.

In the second game, the Jayhawks committed twice as many errors (two) as they had hits (one), but lost by just one run. Kassie Humphreys (0-2) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just one run on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Jessica Moppin had KU’s lone hit.

Kansas (1-3) will face the same two teams again this morning.

Swimming

KU’s swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day with a win Saturday over Arkansas, 181-119, at Robinson Natatorium.

The five seniors — Kim Bolin, Ashley Dower, Maegan Himes, Kristen Johnson and Whitney Sondall — helped KU finish the 2003-04 regular season 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12 Conference. The nine wins are the most since the 1995-96 season.
