KU runs away with victory

Kansas University’s men’s basketball team had few problems in a strong 96-77 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks hit nine three-pointers and outscored the Red Raiders, 50-31, in the first 18 minutes of the second half.

KU jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first four minutes behind two three-pointers by Aaron Miles and a three-pointer and a jumper by J.R. Giddens.

The Jayhawks pushed their advantage to 11 points, 22-11, four minutes later, as they started 5-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Kansas led by 10 points, 34-24, when Miles picked up his second foul trying to draw a charge on Andre Emmett about 12 minutes in and left the game for a few minutes.

Even without their floor general, the Jayhawks kept a fairly comfortable lead over the Red Raiders, and led 42-29 with just more than three minutes remaining after a 6-0 run.

Emmett helped Texas Tech get within eight points at halftime, 44-36, by scoring five of the final seven points of the half.

The teams battled evenly early in the first half as Keith Langford picked up his second and third fouls in the first minute and a half. The Jayhawks extended their lead to 13 points on Giddens’ third three-pointer of the game three and a half minutes in, 61-48.

Giddens’ three-pointer started a 20-9 run over the next 10 minutes despite Langford fouling out with 6:38 left and Jeff Graves picking up his fourth foul during the spurt. KU led by as many as 26 points, 96-70, with just less than two minutes left before winning by 19.

Miles had eight points, nine assists, and Giddens had 18 points and three rebounds. David Padgett had 16 points, five boards, three assists, and Keith Langford had eight points, six assists, three rebounds. The game was Langford’s first of the season under 10 points.

Wayne Simien scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 17 boards, and Jeff Graves scored seven points. Michael Lee had eight points, four rebounds and four assists, and Christian Moody had seven points. Omar Wilkes hit a late basket.

Emmett had 29 points, eight rebounds and two steals for Texas Tech, and Devonne Giles had 15 points and four rebounds before fouling out. Robert Tomaszek hit a basket, and Josh Washington scored 10 points.

Michael Marshall had seven points and three boards, and Curtis Marshall scored eight points. Darryl Dora had three points, and Tanner Ogden had three points.

KU was 36-of-71 shooting, including 9-of-20 from long distance, and 15-of-21 from the charity stripe. Texas Tech is 23-of-60 shooting from the field, including 5-of-15 from three-point range, and 26-of-31 from the foul line.
