Self recovering from ‘minor’ surgery

Kansas University men’s basketball coach Bill Self won’t be playing golf anytime soon.

Self, who had been out of his office more than usual in it last week, told the Journal-World on Saturday his comings and goings were because he had abdominal surgery April 9.

Self had several hernias removed from an incision originally made to remove part of his colon two summers ago.

“I’ve been laid up a little bit, but I’m sure feeling better now,” Self said Saturday. “I’ve been in and out of the office recovering from minor surgery.

“I’m feeling fine. I feel my personal health is my business, so I felt it wasn’t necessary to say anything about it.”

Self won’t be able to golf for six weeks, which is a bummer for a guy who loves to golf in the less-stressful offseason.

He had staples removed from the surgical incision Friday, a week to the day of his surgery, and hopes to be back in the office full time this week and able to hit the recruiting trail soon.

Two years ago at Illinois, Self was hospitalized five days during the season because of diverticulitis, which is inflammation of the intestines. He had part of his colon removed the following summer.

“I didn’t miss any games,” Self said. “We played Tuesday, I checked in Wednesday, we played Arkansas Saturday in Chicago. The doctor let me out to coach, and I went back to the hospital after the game.”

That summer he had the surgery to remove part of his colon.

“It’s a very stressful profession,” Self said. “If you don’t have your health, you can’t do your job and do it to your potential unless you have energy.”

No UNC: It appears North Carolina will not be the destination of David Padgett, who this week announced plans to transfer from KU.

ESPN’s Andy Katz talked to a source close to UNC coach Roy Williams who said Williams hasn’t talked to Padgett since the two weeks leading to Williams’ departure from KU. Katz said the last time Williams called Padgett, Padgett’s dad wouldn’t allow the coach to speak to his son. Katz’s sources indicate Carolina will not be pursuing Padgett.

Norm’s first signee: Cedric Jackson , a 6-foot-1 high school senior guard from New Jersey, has become Norm Roberts’ first signee at St. John’s. Roberts was KU’s associate head coach last season.
