Six Kansas boats advance in Cup

? All six of Kansas University’s boats Saturday reached the Grand or Petite Finals of the Knecht Cup.

Five of KU’s six boats — the First Novice 8, Novice 4, Second Varsity 8 and two Varsity 4 boats — will compete in today’s Grand Finals. KU’s First Varsity 8 crew will compete in the Petite Finals.

To reach today’s finals, teams had to make it through a qualifying round Saturday morning and a semifinal in the afternoon.

In singles competition, KU’s Beth Olson won the the Final A singles race, with junior Erin Hennessey taking third. In the Final B singles race, KU junior Kristy Hainer took second place. Senior Beth Hickey was fourth.

“We had a really good day,” Kansas coach Rob Catloth said. “The weather was great, and I was pleased with all of the races.

“I am very excited and pleased to have all of our boats participating in the final rounds tomorrow.”
