There was one major surprise Wednesday when Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino released his first depth chart of the spring. Sophomore tight end Derek Fine, who strictly was a special-teams player last season, has moved ahead of returning senior starter Lyonel Anderson and senior Brandon Watkins.
“He’s gotten a ton of work,” offensive coordinator Nick Quartaro said of Fine. “He’s got football instincts. He has a good burst and runs well.”
Sophomore Charles Gordon, meanwhile, remains No. 1 at cornerback and flanker. Mangino has not yet decided which side of the ball Gordon — who also returns punts — will devote most of his time to next fall.
