Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino said tight end Lyonel Anderson was “day-to-day” because of an undisclosed injury after Wednesday night’s practice.
Anderson was hurt Sept. 20 against Jacksonville State and did not start the following week against Missouri.
“Our trainer is working on him,” said Mangino, whose team had a bye last week. “He gets several treatments a day. We’re trying to get him ready, and we just don’t know. He has done limited work this week on the practice field.”
Anderson has three catches for 72 yards. He played sparingly in KU’s 35-14 victory over MU. If he isn’t ready for Saturday’s game at Colorado, senior Denver Latimore will make his second consecutive start.
Latimore took Anderson’s place in the lineup against Mizzou and caught a two-point conversion pass. He has three catches for 16 yards and a touchdown.
“He’s done a very good job to this point,” Mangino said. “He’s a much better blocker, he’s catching the football, he’s got a good grasp on his assignments. Denver is what you call a program guy; he’s just working his way through the ranks.”
Latimore was a three-sport athlete at Halstead and spent his first college season as a red-shirt receiver at Butler County Community College, but Latimore said he didn’t want to play football after that season. He picked a good school, enrolling at Wichita State, which doesn’t field a team.
He came to KU as a sophomore in 2001 and played on the scout team.
Latimore played special teams last year and was the backup tight end, but he was used primarily as a blocker.
“He’s a guy that stayed in our system (and) kept at it every day,” Mangino said. “He’s on time for everything. He does everything with a lot of enthusiasm. He’s just one of those guys that got better by keeping working at it.”
CU coach Gary Barnett told the Boulder Daily Camera that if Quinn Sypniewski didn’t play against KU, the tight end would sit out the rest of the season and take a medical red-shirt.
Barnett told the Camera he would use Bloom as a defensive back only in emergency. Saturday’s game could be it. Freshman cornerback Terrence Wheatley (bruised sternum) and senior safety Medford Moorer (elbow) are recovering from injuries. Both were expected to play, but sophomore safety Brian Iwuh will not play after returning home to Houston following the deaths of his stepfather and brother.
