KU led by 16 at halftime, and extended that lead after the break with hot shooting. The Jayhawks hit 17 straight shots midway through the second half and 21 of 24 during one 14-minute stretch.
The Jayhawks (27-7) finished just two points shy of their tournament-game record of 110 points, set in a 110-52 victory over Prairie View A&M in the 1998 tournament. Saturday’s victory was the fourth-largest margin of victory in tournament history for KU.
Senior guard Kirk Hinrich led KU with 24 points and added five rebounds. Fellow senior Nick Collison scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Three sophomores also reached double figures in scoring for KU. Keith Langford had 19 points and five boards, Aaron Miles had 18 points and Michael Lee added 10 points.
Junior forwards Jeff Graves and Bryant Nash each had five points, Moulaye Niang and Brett Olson each had two points, and Stephen Vinson added a free throw.
Jason Braxton led ASU (20-12) with 17 points, 15 in the second half. Tommy Smith and Ike Diogu each scored 13 points, and Diogu added seven rebounds.
Curtis Millage added nine points, Shawn Redhage had seven points and seven boards, and Donnell Knight added five points.
Jamie Andrisevic had four points for the Sun Devils, Jamal Hill and Kenny Crandall each had a three-pointer, and Kyle Dodd added two free throws.
KU shot 68 percent (40-of-59) from the field, a new NCAA-tournament record. The Jayhawks hit 5-of-9 three-pointers and 23-of-34 from the charity stripe. ASU made 28-of-69 field-goal attempts, 4 of 14 shots from behind the three-point line and 16 of 23 free-throw attempts. The Jayhawks outrebounded the Sun Devils, 39-31.
HALFTIME REPORT
The Jayhawks led by as many as 22 points, 34-12, in the first half, but the Sun Devils cut the lead by a bit at the foul line. KU was whistled for 10 fouls in the first half, including three on Jeff Graves and two each for Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich.
Arizona State went 8-of-10 from the charity stripe, but hit just 11 of 31 field-goal attempts. Kansas shot 18-of-30 from the field and hit two of three three-point attempts. KU outrebounded ASU, 19-18.
Collison leads all scorers with 13 points, and also has seven rebounds. Hinrich has 12 points, including two three-pointers, and Keith Langford has 11 points.
Aaron Miles has five points, Michael Lee has four points and Graves has a basket.
Ike Diogu leads Arizona State with 10 points and five rebounds. Tommy Smith also has 10 points, and Curtis Millage has four points. Jamal Hill has a three-pointer, and Kyle Dodd and Jason Braxton each have two points.
