STILLWATER, OKLA. ? Junior Kara Pierce and Kirsten Milhoan pitched 12 shutout innings, helping the Kansas University softball team earn two victories, 11-0 and 6-0, Saturday against New Mexico State at Cowgirl Softball Stadium.
KU had six extra-base hits and 12 total knocks in the first game as Pierce (11-3) dominated NMS. Junior Mel Wallach and freshman Jessica Moppin hit back-to-back homers for the Jayhawks (16-4).
Milhoan (5-1) struck out a career-high nine batters in the nightcap, allowing just three hits. Wallach and junior Sandy Smith each homered for the Jayhawks.
The Jayhawks will play a doubleheader against Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. today to open their Big 12 Conference season. KU and OSU were scheduled to play one game both today and Monday, but a forecast of bad weather Monday warranted the twinbill today.
