Don Fambrough: 1971-74

By Staff     Sep 9, 2002

Don Fambrough might as well be known as Mr. KU Football. His lengthy association with the program begins with his career as a player, earning All-Big Six honors in 1946 and 1947, and playing in the 1948 Orange Bowl, the Jayhawk’s first post-season bowl appearance.

The first of Fambrough’s two tenures as head football coach began with his being named to the post on January 8, 1971. Quickly he focused on the task of assembling a coaching staff as outgoing coach Pepper Rogers took four assistants with him to his new job at UCLA.

After compiling a 19-25-1 record after four seasons, his first term as head Hawk ended on December 3, 1974 when athletic director Clyde Walker declined to offer him an extension and Fambrough resigned with one year remaining in his contract.

In 1973, Fambrough coached the Jayhawks into the Liberty Bowl though the favored KU squad was defeated. Fambrough would be heard from again.
