Hinrich hampered by foul trouble

? Kansas University’s Kirk Hinrich played just 17 minutes during Friday’s 73-69 Sweet 16 victory over Illinois at Kohl Center.

This time, however, the junior guard’s limited playing time had nothing to do with his sprained left ankle.

“I was ticked off,” Hinrich said of the time he spent on the bench, “but I also was still cheering for my teammates and waiting for my chance.”

Hinrich’s second foul came just 51/2 minutes into the game against Frank Williams right after a Williams steal. Hinrich was whistled again with 12:02 left in the first half while playing defense against Williams.

“I think I was maybe too pumped up tonight,” Hinrich said. “I got some silly fouls.”

Pestered more by reporters about his foul woes Hinrich scored three points with one assist and three turnovers in 17 minutes he said: “I don’t know what the rules are on commenting on officiating. I just need to play smarter. And I’m happy to extend our season.”

Nick Collison, who played just six minutes and didn’t score in the first half while also picking up three fouls, rallied for 11 points the second half while playing 14 minutes.

“I’m happy to move on,” Collison said. “We played tough. Illinois played tough. We made some stops when we needed to. It was guys hustling out there at all times.

“Beating Illinois there’s a sense of relief there since we lost to them last year,” he added. “We are not satisfied. Our goal was not to make the Elite Eight but more than that.”

Jeff Boschee missed the front of a one-and-one with 19.4 seconds left, KU up 71-69. It was the first free throw of the game for the 80-percent shooter.

“I am not a person who forgets something like that. I was ticked off at myself for missing it,” Boschee said. “But I also knew I had to get back on defense. I’m happy we’re in the Elite Eight. I’ve never been there before. It’s new surroundings.”
