Clarence James, an assistant football coach at three Big 12 schools who most recently was coaching the high school ranks, has joined Kansas University’s staff.
James, who spent seven years at Oklahoma, five years at Texas and five years at Texas Tech, has been hired as KU’s wide receivers coach, replacing Darrell Wyatt, who resigned as associate head coach/offensive coordinator to join the Oklahoma State staff.
“We are very excited to have a coach the caliber of Clarence James as an addition to our staff,” KU head coach Terry Allen said in a prepared release. “Clarence is an outstanding on-the-field teacher, and he will be a valuable addition as a recruiter.”
James coached defensive ends at Texas Tech from 1982-86, wideouts at Texas from 1987-91 and wide receivers at OU from 1992-98.
James also was an aide at North Texas, Lamar (Texas) High and Okmulgee (Okla.) High. A former all-state running back at Okmulgee Dunbar High, James was coach at Allen (Texas) High last season.
His hiring leaves Kansas with two vacancies on its staff. Allen dismissed defensive coordinator Ardell Wiegandt and offensive line coach Walt Klinker in November, and tight ends coach Todd Middleton resigned. Wyatt left for OSU after Allen hired Sam Pittman, most recently from Missouri, to replace Klinker.
