Iowa State took sole possession of first place in the Big 12 with tonight’s win-their fourth in a row over Kansas. The Jayhawks had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but two long shots fell aside.

With just one minute left to play in the game, a pair of Eric Chenowith free throws put Kansas back to within two points of Iowa State. The Cyclones missed at the other end and the Jayhawks took the ball back up the court for a final gasp.

Kirk Hinrich’s three-pointer fell short. Kansas snagged the rebound and took a time-out. With the last seconds ticking away, Luke Axtell put up one final shot, but it was not to be.

The Cyclones hit a three-pointer at the first half buzzer to take a 46-35 lead. Kansas took advantage of an early second half ISU cold spell to close the defecit to three points, but ISU quickly regained their rhythm, hitting a total of 11 of 17 from three-point range.

Drew Gooden led Kansas with 14 points, despite fouling out with 2:15 to go. Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich each scored 12. Kenny Gregory and Eric Chenowith each notched 11. Jeff Boschee added 10.

Caintrell Horton paced Iowa State with 19 points, and Jamal Tinsley added 18.
