Kansas lands commitment from Spivey

DeShawn Spivey, a 6-foot-3, 228-pound defensive end from Kansas City Washington High, has given an early verbal commitment to Kansas University’s football team.

MO-KAN football’s Jon Kirby, who announced the commitment late Thursday night, says Spivey is “one of the most gifted athletes certainly the top defensive end prospect in the two-state area.”

Spivey says he chose KU over Nebraska, Texas and Iowa State. Spivey committed Thursday after returning from KU’s week-long football camp.

“I learned a lot of things at KU’s camp,” Spivey told Mo-Kan football. “They are recruiting me as a linebacker. It’s kind of a new position for me.

“I picked Kansas because I wanted to stay close to home. It’s an up-and-coming program and a good place for me. I just felt comfortable there and the coaches were honest. I’m glad I don’t have to worry where I’m going to college anymore.”

Spivey also plays tight end at KC Washington.

In track he ran the 100, 200 and the anchor leg of the 400 relay team that made it to state. His best time in the 100 last season was 10.74.

“He’s raw, but very talented,” Washington coach Scott Milkowart said.
