Carl Nesmith, a senior free safety and co-captain on Kansas University’s football team, was arrested by Lawrence police early Friday hours after he appeared at Big 12 media day in Kansas City, Mo. on an outstanding traffic warrant.

Lawrence Municipal Court officials said Nesmith failed to appear for a court date to answer a misdemeanor charge of driving while his license was suspended.

Court officials said they did not know when or why Nesmith’s license was suspended.

Nesmith was booked at 3:26 a.m. Friday into Douglas County Jail. He was released an hour later after posting bond of $297.50.

A preseason All-Big 12 Conference selection, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Nesmith transferred to KU last year from Butler County CC. He is a native of Jacksonville, Fla.
