CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Roy Williams has had a rough couple of days.
“He’s sick right now. He told me yesterday he’s averaged two to three hours of sleep a night. He has no idea what he wants to do,” said Scott Williams, Roy’s son, who works as an investment banker in Charlotte, N.C.
On Tuesday, Scott Williams made the two-hour drive from Charlotte to Chapel Hill, N.C., to meet with his “pops” for “about an hour” on the University of North Carolina campus.
Kansas University’s basketball coach was in town to visit with UNC athletics director Dick Baddour and Carolina coaching legend Dean Smith about the vacant Tar Heel coaching job. Williams even snuck in a round of golf with Smith, his former boss.
Scott Williams found a visibly emotional person in his dad, who had been vacationing in Charleston, S.C. since Saturday while debating the pros and cons of the UNC job.
“He said he’d have a decision by Friday. He feels every 30 minutes he could have a different opinion,” Scott Williams said. “The hard part for him is he so despises the feeling he’s letting people down. It’s tearing him apart.
“The fact Lawrence has been so good to him is tearing him apart. In the hour (meeting in Chapel Hill), at least once he looked like he would not make it through the sentence.”
Scott said he’s spoken to his father twice since UNC coach Bill Guthridge resigned last Friday.
“The last time I talked to him (before Tuesday) he asked if I had any words of wisdom,” Scott Williams said. “I think we’d be giving me too much credit saying I gave him words of wisdom.
“I told him it’s a good thing in one way. He has two absolutely fantastic programs he’d be dealing with.”
Scott has identified the major factors in his dad’s decision.
“In high school, when he decided to coach basketball, he always dreamed of being coach at North Carolina,” Scott Williams said. “He had an amazing experience (for 10 years at UNC) working with fantastic people.
“Coach Smith is probably lobbying hard (but) I think the hardest thing about turning down North Carolina is he grew up here and his dream was to be a coach at Carolina.”
Another plus for North Carolina is the fact Williams and his wife, Wanda, have family here. Both Roy and Wanda have relatives in Asheville, N.C. Roy’s sister lives in Charlotte. Daughter Kimberly is a student at UNC.
“I think having family all over the state helps (UNC). He has been open in saying there’s a good chance when he retires he’d come back to live here. He’d be closer to the beach house (in Charleston). I know that’s important to my mom.”
Of his mom’s input, Scott said: “One of the more interesting things is mom has not said a word,” Scott Williams said. “She has not said a word. She understands what a great situation he has at Kansas. She looks at what is best for him, trying to keep him happy.”

Scott Williams says Kansas still has a great shot at keeping his dad.
“Last week, he (Roy) had his basketball camp and Greg Gurley was there with his baby,” Williams said. “He (Roy) mentioned he’d like grandchildren. Greg said, ‘You’ve already got four grandkids (children of Gurley, Rex Walters and Scot Pollard). His heart sank when he heard that. The former players he has … they mean so much to him.”
Scott Williams disagrees with reports there’s been a conspiracy in place that his dad accepted the UNC job last Friday before Williams held a press conference in Lawrence.
“I’m positive (there is no conspiracy),” he said. “I’m trying to be as neutral as I can, but there are so many bold faced lies. People think they know what they are talking about. It’s always written, ‘Some university source,’ or they’ll say they talked to a source on condition of anonymity.
“There are four people who have a clue Pops, coach Guthridge, coach Smith and Mr. Baddour. On Kansas’ side Dr. Frederick and Chancellor Hemenway.”
Scott Williams said he believes his dad, “would tell Dr. Frederick first because of how good Dr. Frederick has been to Pops.”
Vanderbilt athletics director Todd Turner told the Nashville Tennessean former KU assistant Kevin Stallings had doubts Williams would take the UNC job:
“Kevin doesn’t think Roy will leave,” Turner said. “Because he’s such a loyal guy and to him, the relationships he’s got at Kansas are much stronger now personally than they might be at North Carolina because he sees them (at KU) every day. Kevin said he is looking forward to recruiting for Vanderbilt on Saturday (first day of summer evaluation period).”
