“We’re very proud of Mark and the job he has done here for the last three years, especially in the last two when we were 23-2 with a national championship and conference title in one season and now a 10-2 record and a New Year’s Day bowl the next. He’s been very instrumental in our success. Our staff is happy for him and we believe he’ll do an excellent job at Kansas.”

OU head football coach Bob Stoops

“I think Kansas has hit a home run with this one. Mark is not only a disciplinarian and a class-act, but he is extremely well respected by his peers inside and outside of football. I have tremendous respect for him and he has a very bright future ahead of him. He will do a terrific job at Kansas.”

OU head basketball coach Kelvin Sampson

“Mark Mangino is one of the greatest stories of persistence in the coaching profession. He has a passion for helping young people and will do a great job for Kansas. I am proud to have been associated with him. He embodies all that is good in the coaching profession.”

Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel

“Mark is a very good hire for the University of Kansas. He is very intelligent and a good worker. Mark knows what it takes to develop a successful program, having been a part of that both here at Kansas State and at Oklahoma. Mark has a nice family and he has always been a good family man.”

Here are some comments about Roy Williams from people in the Kansas University athletics department, the Big 12 and the Kansas Statehouse:

Oklahoma coach

Kelvin Sampson:

“Roy Williams … the way he runs his program, the kinds of kids he produces, the fan base he has at Allen Fieldhouse … I don’t know if there’s a more respected program in the country.”

KU women’s coach

Marian Washington:

“I’m sure it’s a heck of a situation he’s in. I know it’s exciting and probably very, very stressful, too. He’s been so committed to this program. I’m sure it’s going to be tough for him the next several days. I think he’s done a great job. I think we all would miss him if he should decide to leave.”

KU men’s tennis coach

Mark Riley:

“He is a great guy and really great coach. Hopefully, we don’t take him for granted. He took a risk moving here. He’s an East coast guy. I can fully understand what he’s going through. The only thing that could get me to leave here is home. If he makes one move for a job, it’s North Carolina.”

Tim Weaver,

Kansas Relays coordinator:

“Coach Williams runs the type of program you want to be around. I certainly hope he’ll be here tomorrow, Monday and if not, thanks for 12 years and beat everybody but Kansas.”

Richard Konzem,

KU assistant AD:

“I always thought there would be a decision to make. I always hoped it’d be later than this. He’s been the model coach for me to look at in a career. I don’t think anybody saw this coming. I didn’t see this coming until the 10 o’clock news last night. I knew when coach Guthridge stepped down, this was decision day. I hoped it was a few years down the road. I understand the tremendous dilemma this puts coach Williams in. No matter what he decides, one school will be ecstatic, the other disappointed.”

Kansas Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer:

“This whole week I’ve been out there seeing some of the real assets in our state. And when you talk about assets to the state, you have to talk about Roy Williams. He’s a real quality person, and has really brought positive attention to our state. I’d truly hate to have us lose him, but I understand people have to make decisions that are good for them.”

Oklahoma State coach

Eddie Sutton:

“The recruiting period starts next weekend. It should give Kansas an opportunity to get a new coach in, if Roy is leaving. It will give Roy an opportunity to get there and decide what is needed to help the program at the University of North Carolina. It’ll be interesting to see who Kansas hires. I’m sure a lot of coaches will be standing in line for that job.”
