Kansas University men’s basketball signee DeShawn Stevenson scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting as the East defeated the West, 146-131, in Monday’s Sonny Vaccaro Roundball Classic in Raleigh, N.C.

Stevenson he ended the game with a vicious dunk following a pass off the backboard hit one of four three-pointers.

Stevenson is a 6-foot-6 guard from Fresno, Calif., who signed with KU last November. Texas recruit Brian Boddicker scored 12 of his team-high 20 points in the final quarter for the East.

North Carolina signee Brian Morrison scored 19 and shared MVP honors for the East with UConn signee Taliek Brown. Brown scored 13 points and tied the event’s record for assists with 13. Stevenson played for the East despite hailing from the West coast.

Travon Bryant, a 6-9 forward from Long Beach, Calif., said Monday he still has a final list of Kansas, Cal-Berkeley and Missouri despite the fact he hasn’t heard from KU coaches in a bit.

“I think probably they feel they did everything they could and it’s up to me to make a decision,” Bryant said Monday night.

Bryant added he is not alarmed at not speaking to KU coach Roy Williams at the Pump Easter Tournament in Carson, Calif.

“He saw me there, I’m sure he did, but I’m not stressed about that,” Bryant said. “They (KU coaches) sent me a fax at the hotel at the McDonald’s game. They said the appreciated the letter I sent (to Williams discussing his recruitment) and would be talking to me soon.”

Bryant said he’d pick a school after his SAT test scores arrive. He took the test Saturday. The month-long spring signing period begins Wednesday. KU has two scholarships to give.

Williams and KU assistant Joe Holladay attended the Pump Easter Tournament. It appeared the Jayhawks were watching 6-8 Dennis Latimore of Halstead, who played for the L.A. Pump N Run team.

“He looks older than a high school junior. He has a mature body, a good body,” Mark Mayamura of Recruiting USA said of Latimore. “He seems to play at the rim, not over the rim.”

Two other juniors KU may recruit next year also played at the tourney. They are Rick Rickert, a 6-10 forward from Duluth, Minn., and Jason Carter, 6-8 of Las Vegas.

Rickert says KU, Duke, Syracuse, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Florida, Arizona and Michigan State have expressed interest.

“He’s a big body able to shoot from the outside,” Mayamura said of Rickert.
