Kansas softball faces busy weekend

If a movie were made about Kansas University’s softball team, the title would have to be “Silence of the Bats.”

The Jayhawks have played 34 innings against Big 12 Conference teams and have failed to score in 33 of them.

KU’s only runs in league play came on a two-run homer by Shannon Stanwix against Texas A&M last weekend. In five conference contests, the Jayhawks are hitting only .165 with a puny slugging percentage of .183.

Kansas, 1-4 in the Big 12 and 21-19 overall, will play host to Oklahoma State in a 1:30 p.m. twinbill today at Jayhawk Field. Then KU will play host to Texas Tech in 1 p.m. single games on Saturday and Sunday.

Notes

  • KU centerfielder and leadoff hitter Shelly Musser is the only Jayhawk with a batting average over .300. Musser, a sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz., is batting .308.
  • Oklahoma State second baseman Lezli Leathers spent her first two seasons at Kansas where she batted .186 in 84 games. At OSU, she’s batting .288.
  • Carla Marchetti, a Kansas aide from 1996-99, is Texas Tech’s interim head coach. Marchetti was elevated when Renee Luers-Gillispie resigned on Feb. 23. Sara Holland, a former KU player (1995-98), is one of Marchetti’s aides.
