J-W editorial: Coaching changes

How refreshing to have a head basketball coach who really wants to stay in Kansas.

Coach Roy Williams said Monday he had told Ohio State University officials he wasn’t interested in their head coaching job. He also revealed he had made similar responses to two other universities who had contacted him about coaching vacancies.

The contacts are a high compliment for someone who has only one year under his belt as a head coach. But Williams isn’t allowing the attention to turn his head away from his Kansas team. He also realized the KU job is one of the nation’s best collegiate basketball posts.

“I made the statement when I was hired that I’m not going to be a guy who jumps around,” Williams said Monday. “I do think a lot of this place, and until it’s proven that I can’t get it done here, I’m happy here. I’m committed to the people of Kansas.”

Although past experience has made KU fans a little skeptical of such declarations of loyalty by basketball coaches, Williams seems sincerely dedicated to the team and to staying at KU.

And most KU fans are probably glad to hear it.
