New Kansas University basketball coach Roy Williams knew about the NCAA inquiry into the Jayhawks program before he was hired last week.

KU athletic director Bob Frederick, in announcing the current investigation of the Kansas men’s basketball program this morning, confirmed that he informed every prospect he interviewed for the coaching job about the NCAA letter of inquiry that arrived June 20.

Williams, who was named the Jayhawks’ seventh head coach just last Friday, was on the road recruiting today, but issued a statement through KU’s sports information office.

“I have confidence in the administration of the University of Kansas and also in Larry Brown and his staff in the way the program has been conducted,” Williams statement read. “We fully intend to continue to operate the basketball program under NCAA guidelines. We hope to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.”

The KU sports information department also issued a terse statement from Brown, who became head coach of the San Antonio Spurts on June 13.

It reads: “I believe in the NCAA and want to help resolve this matter as quickly as possible. I will be working closely with the university in responding to the NCAA.”
