A little light in the backcourt and short on perimeter shooting, the Kansas men’s basketball program may be in the process of addressing both areas on the recruiting trail.

According to national college basketball writer Jeff Goodman, Iowa grad transfer Isaiah Moss has reopened his recruitment and is firmly on KU’s radar.

In fact, Goodman Tweeted on Friday afternoon that “all signs point to Kansas.”

Moss, a 6-foot-5, redshirt junior from Chicago’s Simeon High School, had decided to play his final season of college eligibility at Arkansas but evidently has had a change of heart.

"After much thought and deliberation with my family, I have made the difficult decision to re-open my recruitment," he Tweeted late Friday afternoon. "I would like to thank the coaching staff at the University of Arkansas for all they have done for me. I am hopeful and excited for what the future holds for me."

Moss visited Kansas while looking to transfer and his addition would provide KU with some much-needed 3-point shooting prowess on a roster that returns just 28 percent of its 3-point makes from a season ago.

While starting all 35 games and earning Iowa’s Most Improved Player award in 2018-19, Moss shot 42% from 3-point range, which ranked fourth in the Big Ten.

He was fifth on the team in scoring (9.2 points per game), second in steals (32) and fourth in assists (62) while reaching double figures 15 times, including eight games of 15 or more points and four games with four or more 3-pointers.

Back in May, when Moss chose Arkansas, his AAU coach, Mike Irvin, told Richard Davenport of WholeHogSports.com that Moss really started to make a name for himself during his junior and senior years on the AAU circuit and at Simeon.

“He came on late his junior and senior year,” Irvin said. “Once he came on as far as his athletic ability and ball-playing skills he was kind of late to hit the circuit. He’s always been an athletic kid that could shoot the ball, can run the floor, play defense. With him, it wasn’t a question…if he keeps working hard, he can make some money at this game.”

Wrote Goodman of a potential Moss-Kansas marriage: “If (the) Jayhawks land Moss, they fill their biggest need: Perimeter shooting.”

If Moss joins the Jayhawks, he would be the most experienced player in a Kansas backcourt that includes junior Marcus Garrett, sophomores Devon Dotson and Ochai Agbaji and freshmen Christian Braun and Issac McBride.

With three scholarships still to give out in the 2019 class, KU has more than enough room to add both Moss and prep target Jalen Wilson, a 4-star wing who visited KU last weekend and Tweeted on Friday, "Stay tuned."

Wilson's mother, Lisa, told the Journal-World Friday morning that the family was still discussing Jalen's options, which include KU, North Carolina and Michigan, and that she hoped they would have a decision soon.

Later Friday, Wilson revealed, via Twitter, that he would announce his decision at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

In a follow-up to his original Tweet about Moss, Goodman wrote that Kansas landing Moss and Wilson would inspire him to move the Jayhawks into the No. 1 spot in his preseason poll.

I can almost swear I read a post or two this spring about KU going to the NIT next season.

Brian Wilson 2 months, 1 week ago

Exactly. A bunch of recruiting whiners.
My expectations are always higher. LOL. I want to go to the big dance every year and with the talent KU has I always lovingly blame Coach.

This next year I want to see our players stepping out and guarding the three. I want to see our players like Enaruna play their true position, SF, and develop at that spot rather than playing them at PF just because they are tall. I want to see 5 star players that aren't producing get benched for players that are producing. It used to be that players had to ride on and off the bench until they developed consistency rather than just putting them into the starting lineup forcing us to pray they have a breakout game. Finally, I am hoping Coach has stopped to evaluate all of this stuff the past few years and adjust.

I thought I heard that Coach Self was going to call you in for a private consulting session.

Or maybe it was just indigestion.

Brian Wilson 2 months, 1 week ago

Coach Self needs to call someone after this last year!

2018-19 was his worst recruiting/coaching job of his career in my opinion and he ought to have indigestion. It made me sick to my stomach as well. As GREAT a COACH BILL SELF is, all coaches should be humbled by their poor performances and mistakes and should give consideration to their critics. The largest room in the world is the room for improvement!!

But, I must say, his post season scramble to rebound and assemble the team for next year has been remarkable if not interesting.

Dirk Medema 2 months, 1 week ago

Bob - At least that was better than the flame calling for Coach Self to be fired.

Len Shaffer 2 months, 1 week ago

Please, please, please let both become Jayhawks ...

Some of the best JUCO recruiting in D1. Self, once again, scrambling around for leftovers. Three open scholarships of 13 total on June 7. The NjCAA better watch out. We are loaded!

Maybe William and Mary has another transfer? The Stache! I loved that kid.

If you keep making excuses for roster mismanagement, eventually all you are is an excuse-maker. It turns my stomach to watch a guy make a mockery of the program this way.

Jay Scott 2 months, 1 week ago

Brett....Do you need some $$ help to get your meds refilled? This nonsense isn't ignorance, it's emotional and mental illness. You seemed so much more stable just a few weeks ago.

Did you notice that ESPN had KU #3 in preseason rankings last week? Do you forget that they were preseason #1 last season?

Did you miss this last line of the article while you were convulsing with rage? "In a follow-up to his original Tweet about Moss, Goodman wrote that Kansas landing Moss and Wilson would inspire him to move the Jayhawks into the No. 1 spot in his preseason poll."

The only mockery being made is you of yourself. Get help. You can beat this.

BMcCoob - literary genius and soothsayer, mind reader wrapped into one. Critic of LJW staff, strident overachiever when demeaning 19’ish year old college kids. All combined with outraged memory and gastrointestinal disorder.

This guy lives at Fuzzy’s, drinking warm saliva laden wash-back out of leftover fishbowls and scrounging uneaten burritos from the dumpster out back.

Go easy, McCoob. Go easy.

I wish there was someone here who could ban you before you stroke out over "issues" that don't even exist regarding the "failings" you make up in your own mind about KU basketball.

Robert Brock 2 months, 1 week ago

C’mon - the better basketball schools are off and running in pursuit of Class of 2020 and 2021 kids. KU is desperately wooing 2019 kids to fill the three scholarship deficit. Self should fire at least one assistant coach and bring in a replacement who can recruit.

Steve Corder 2 months, 1 week ago

Not "off & running?" And you know this how?

Jay Scott 2 months, 1 week ago

Now where BM is fighting emotional issues...this comment is just purely stupid.

OOPS..that wasn't supposed to g...however, I got a $30 bottle of wine and toasted his memory and thanked him for all the cool Lego Architecture models of his masterpieces!! :}

Well, I am pleased Coach is taking care of 2019 kids first and foremost. I will trust the staff who has won 14 our of 16 conference titles. How many conference titles have all the other head coaches in America won over the last 16 years? Putting things in perspective might help some on here. But then some simply do not want to be helped. They have their view of how things should go and Coach is blamed when it does not go that way.

Brian Wilson 2 months, 1 week ago

Well who else is to blame?

a remarkable if not interesting scramble to assemble a team for 2019.

What if Dotson had jumped and Silvio didn't get reinstated what would you be saying then?

Don't get me wrong, I think KU would still be good without Dotson and Silvio but....but you have to think to some degree it looks like Self is getting lucky.

Shannon Gustafson 2 months, 1 week ago

Blame for what? Producing the preseason #1 and undefeated team before Doke's injury last year or producing the #1 (and possibly #1 soon) preseason team this year? It was not Self's fault that the team he assembled last year (the best team in the country) didn't finish the season the way he put it together because injuries derailed that plan.

The BIGGEST "recruits" we could get for 2019 are Dotson, Doke, and Silvio. We got all 3.

What if? You're still playing the what if game? What if an asteroid landed on KU's campus? That question means just as much sense as your "what if" question. Asking about "what if's" about stuff that DID NOT HAPPEN is the dumbest waste of time ever.

Is this a great recruiting class according to rankings? No. Is the team going to be great according to the information we currently have? Yes. Which one is more important?

Jay Scott 2 months, 1 week ago

Chicken little nonsense, as we've seen here, can be a product of either irrationality or ignorance.

In honor of Beach Boy Brian Wilson withdrawing from their upcoming tour we'll look at how some comments are a product of both......

Has it ever occurred to any of the Chicken Littles that players, recruits and coaches ACTUALLY GET TO TALK TO EACH OTHER?

Would a 5 star PG come to Kansas if Dotson planned to return? Know what? They can actually reach out to Dotson! Would HCBS be worried if Dotson assured him he was virtually certain to return? It's no accident that teams almost never have a returning potential lottery pick and a McD All American OAD recruit at the same position. Thay actually talk to each other.... Having a top 5 rated team in the preseason, again, is not the result of luck. It's the product of a HOF coach and an excellent staff.

While all you Chicken Littles were having a collective stroke, the actual players involved kew what was going to happen. Imagine if you used the energy in your life that you spend freaking out doing something useful instead....

Suzi Marshall 2 months, 1 week ago

Personally, I withhold my chicken little antics to the season when the team looses 2 in a row. I don't concern myself with the off season stuff at all. Self is a proven master of pulling recruiting rabbits out of the hat, which is enjoyable to watch.

Jeff Kallmeyer 2 months, 1 week ago

I hope Jeff Goodman is right, Moss would be a great addition!

Joseph Bullock 2 months, 1 week ago

Did any of the critics about last season take into consideration that we lost Udoka, early, and the Staff never thought Silvio would be gone for the whole season (I thought he would be out a maximum of 12 games-normally about 8 games, when taken into consideration the amount his Guardian took, and what the penalty normally is for that amount, or even a larger amount)!

Mike Greer 2 months, 1 week ago

And let's have a show of hands from everyone that thought Vick was going to disappear with six weeks of the season remaining. And never be heard from again. It's like he went into witness protection.

Ultimately it all falls back onto the coach, it does. But, rational adults recognize things happen that no one could have possibly foreseen or prevented. I was hyped about the 18-19 team, and before disaster struck they had some really great moments. Don't forget, they beat two of the three teams they played that were in the final four.

Dwayne Mudd 2 months, 1 week ago

And managed 25 wins after loosing #1 Center in the land, DeSousa held hostage, Ochi and Garrett gimpy, and Vick (by far our best 3-point threat) going awol. Do we even realize how many programs would sell their souls for just one 25 win season.

Mike Greer 2 months, 1 week ago

Why is Moss back in the running? Because Grimes is gone, simple actually. I'm a 3 pt shooter, the 3 pt shooter leaves, there isn't another proven 3 pt shooter on the roster, now I'm interested. Because now I see the opportunity for playing time. All of these young men want to play, 5 star, 4 star, graduate transfers, all of them expect to get meaningful game minutes. Why does KU miss on so many recruits, because we don't have 5 open starting slots every year. And that's a good thing. Three open scholarships means nothing to guys that want to play, what matters is open positions. Does anyone really think someone is going to replace Dotson, what about Dok, no? Silvio, Mac, Agbaji, Garret, there are places the team is two deep with experience. That 3 pt shooter is the one spot where if you play as advertised you can get some time. If you want certain, almost guaranteed, playing time for 19-20, you'd better be damn good (Josh Jackson flexible good) or a 3 pt shooter.
