Kansas’ Paris Daniels — who contributed points in three events Saturday — sports a Jayhawk on her cheek.

— Paris Daniels scored points in three events Saturday, helping Kansas University’s women’s track and field team claim not only the first national title in the women’s program’s history, but the first national title for KU in any women’s sport.

Daniels placed fourth in the 200 meters, then ran legs on the fifth-place 4X100 and sixth-place 4X400 relay teams as the Jayhawks won the NCAA Outdoor at Hayward Field.

“We’re really excited,” 13-year KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “Everyone came into this week with the idea that this was something that we could do. It’s really hard to single one person out, though, because it was a total team effort, but I’m just thankful that everyone did so well. This is just another great step for Kansas.”

Kansas won with 60 points, holding off Texas A&M (44 points) and Oregon (43) for the school’s 11th national track title and first since the KU men won the 1970 Outdoor.

“The thing is, they wanted it,” Redwine said, playing down contributions from him and his coaches. “The coaches didn’t put any more pressure on them than they put on themselves.”

Daniels was fourth in the 200 in 22.52 seconds, and her five points clinched the team crown for the Jayhawks.

Earlier, she teamed with Tianna Valentine, Denesha Morris and Diamond Dixon for fifth in the 4X100 relay in 44.92 seconds.

Daniels, Morris, Dixon and Taylor Washington finished the 4X400 relay in 3:32.74 for sixth place, the highest finish ever for a KU team in that event at the NCAAs.

In all, 11 of the Jayhawks’ 13 entries in the meet contributed to the team’s scoring effort, with senior Andrea Geubelle leading the way with her 16 points in runner-up performances in both the long jump and triple jump.

The Jayhawks had 11 athletes earn first-team All-America honors as well as both relay teams, with an additional two claiming second-team honors. The Jayhawks also had the program’s first individual outdoor champion when Lindsay Vollmer took gold in the heptathlon Friday afternoon.

“When Lindsay won the hep,” Redwine said, “that was a sign everybody wanted to do well.”

KU’s men ended the week in a tie for 28th place with eight points.

“We’re Kansas,” Redwine said. “Whether you’re basketball or track, we’re Kansas. This is just another step for Kansas.”

Kansas Athletics will host a welcome-home reception for the women’s track and field team this afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse. Doors will open to the public at 2 p.m., with the team scheduled to arrive at 2:45 p.m.

KU was a pre-eminent national men's track power once upon a time. 10 national championships. The KU Relays was a world class event full of Olympians and world record holders. The stadium was full. Back then, the idea that sometimes people played football on the javelin pitch was regarded as humorous.

Toto_the_great 1 year, 4 months ago

I misread the story... too early and not enough coffee. I knew the men's program had success, but I didn't realize how much success (a lot of those were before my time and frankly I was too busy to look up the history). What a great feat for the women's program! Rock Chalk!

This is awesome! I watched all of it that I could and tracked on the NCAA site. Amazing achievement and hats off to Stanley Redwine who has built both the men's and women's teams back up from nothing. Outstanding job.

When is the parade? I'm not kidding. They deserve a parade.

Way to go, ladies!!!! It was pretty cool, too - they were singing the alma mater after the victory. Wondering if that's carry over from Weis having the team sing it after all our home games?

Michael Auchard 1 year, 4 months ago

I've meant to comment for awhile now; last year I said the best team at KU might not be the basketball team -- this is what I referred to. Excellent job! I give you the utmost respect. It's a tough sport where you don't get touchdowns or dunks. The only triumph you have, many times, is besting yourself along the way... and that takes total discipline. WAY TO GO!

LOVED WATCHING AND HEARING THE JAYHAWK WOMEN AND THE ALMA MATER WITH THE TROPHY.

ROCK CHALK CHAMPIONSHIP! Way to go! Wonderful news! Impressive to see the turn around over the past few years. Nice work Jayhawks, Coach Redwine and staff!

TexiCaliHawk 1 year, 4 months ago

Wow . . . Just WOW!!! After yesterday's performance, I thought it would be close for the Team title, but that we would hold on for victory. However, a 16 POINT victory is absolutely incredible in a National Championship meet of this caliber -- while there were a few minor disappointments, several ladies really stepped up and garnered points we may not have expected, which is exactly what it takes to pull off this type of accomplishment.

While I hated the ESPNU coverage (they didn't even show a graphic detailing what Lanes the athletes/relay teams were competing in; rather highlighting only a select few to satisfy their 'storyline') and didn't show much love for the Jayhawks throughout the telecast (saving all their 'love' for the vanquished UO Ducks), I loved seeing Geubelle rally the team around singing both the Rock Chalk chant and Alma Mater toward the end of the telecast.

LJW, you are better than this -- please publish a listing of all events, places and times -- at least the ones where KU athletes were competing (you can lift is straight from the NCAA site). Track & Field may not be as big as Basketball at KU (and I'm a HUGE hoops fan!); however, we have arguably more T&F tradition than every school in the Big 12 and most in the country. And winning a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in any sport is a tremendous accomplishment that must be covered (and celebrated) by all true Jayhawk fans.

Hopefully, this Women's National Championship will combine with some excellent individual performances by the Men's team -- along with the promise of our new state-of-the-art 'Rock Chalk Park' facility -- to provide a catalyst for future domination in Track & Field for BOTH Men's and Women's teams. With legends like Santee, Cunningham, Mills, Ryun, Oerter, Huffman, Russell, etc. on the Men's side (among others) and now Geubelle, Dixon, Daniels, Vollmer, etc. on the Women's side (among others), there is no reason why we cannot begin to build a T&F program to match the consistent contenders like Oregon, Arkansas and LSU.

CONGRATULATIONS and RCJK!!!

P.S. Texas A&M 'dropped the baton' in the 4x400 Relay (they were favored to win), or they would have won the Men's Team Title outright . . . insert 'Aggie Joke' here!

John Myers 1 year, 4 months ago

I was annoyed with the same thing on ESPNU's coverage, TCH.. Every race, they might show a couple names of runners.. You'd think they would be better than that..

kureader 1 year, 4 months ago

I recorded ESPN's coverage of the final day of the NCAA Women's Track & Field Championships. I was excited to watch it today. ESPN's coverage was just incredible ... and pathetic. The barely mentioned KU's lead during the 2 hours of coverage. They showed a few seconds of the lady Jayhawks singing the KU alma mater at the very end of the telecast, but the NCAA announcer characterized KU's win as ... "KU got most of it's points in the field events ... and in the relays" ... his tone of voice implied that KU's points were in events that didn't matter. I've notice this before with ESPN. When they have a story line (in this case, it was how great Oregon is), they will stick to it no matter what. In this case, the competition wasn't that close. KU lead the entire way and beat everyone, including Oregon, by at least 16 points. What a great performance by the Lady Jayhawks, and a dismal one by ESPN!

crimsonorblue22 1 year, 4 months ago

Totally agree about the bias on coverage, truly felt like how we're treated in basketball. That little peep-squeak better not announce for us! He was all about Oregon! After the Oregon girl fell in the 1500, announcer was even worse! Nice to know we won in adidas, being in Nike surroundings!

JayhawkRock78 1 year, 4 months ago

So happy for our ladies winning the NCAA's. I got the chance to see both teams compete at the ku relays and saw some great performances. Im happy i got to see them compete this year of all years. If I didn't live 800 miles away I'd be there to we celebrate their return.

WAY TO GO KU WOMEN'S T&F.

Congratulations, Ladies! You have made the Jayhawk Nation proud!

W Keith Swinehart II 1 year, 4 months ago

Congratulations to the KU Women's Track team, another good sign about all-around atheletic excellence. Great job, ladies and coaches. ESPN was the one disappointment, with their stock stories and favorite teams. KU should take the lack of attention as a challenge to rebuild the track program to it's former excellence. The AD Department seems to be working on that thought, and doing a very good job. I like Zenger & Company.

WAY TO GO LADY JAYHAWKS totally awesome you deserve to be very proud of what you have done. and let me say that I am not to proud to eat humble pie, I deserve to eat as much as you serve lol. “We’re Kansas,” Redwine said. “Whether you’re basketball or track, we’re Kansas. This is just another step for Kansas.”

Well said. Great team accomplishment Lady Jayhawks. Especially thanks to Lindsay Vollmer, Andrea Geubelle, and Paris Daniels. It shows how important the field events and team track events are to take home a national championship. You are a special group of young women and should be proud of your accomplishment and the way you represented your school. The senior will be missed. Rock Chalk!!

It was pretty much a mauling. If Diamond performs up to her usual high standards, we would have won by 20+. Not just a championship, but a domination.

Congratulations to Vollmer for the individual championship. With her frame, it seems like she will only get better. I anticipate seeing her at the Olympics in Rio!

Congrats to all!!!!
