Self comments on Henry situation

Carl Henry says sons might still choose Kentucky

Tuesday reports indicated that Xavier and C.J. Henry were again unsure about their college choice.

Kansas University basketballl coach Bill Self today commented to the Journal-World on reports that Xavier Henry and C.J. Henry were having second thoughts about attending KU and still might attend Kentucky.

"I'm still looking into this," Self said, acknowledging the Henry family was upset about a weekend story in the Kansas City Star that the Henrys felt portrayed the family in a negative light.

"I am ready for the finality of it (on where Henrys are going to school). I believe that will occur very soon," Self added.

Rivals.com and 610 radio quoted Carl Henry, father of the Henrys, as saying the family would hold a meeting today in Oklahoma City. Rivals said that Self and assistant Danny Manning would be traveling to OKC tonight. Self this afternoon said he was on his way back to his office from a function in KC and did not confirm whether a trip to OKC was in the works.

Self said because of the "article and blogs and people commenting on the article, the family is very upset and concerned about how they'd be treated in Lawrence."

While expressing anger at the article, Carl Henry said in an interview with 610 radio that his son, Xavier, actually has stayed in touch with incoming Kentucky freshmen John Wall and Daniel Orton and recently told Carl he might want to switch his allegiance to UK.

"A couple weeks ago, my youngest son (Xavier) tells me he wanted to go to Kentucky. Said he's thinking about it," Carl told the station. "He keeps in touch with John Wall and Daniel Orton. They are good friends. What happened is those guys get to talking to him, they could probably change his mind. Actually that's what happened. I was talking to Xavier. I'm telling him, 'Hey, man, I know those are your friends, you can't change just like that. You already gave a commitment. You already said you were coming. Now all of a sudden you dont want to come any more? Just because your friends said, "Hey, this (Kentucky) will be a great place?"'"

Self said the Henrys gave their word they were coming to KU and thus he is "past the point of being concerned with (their) recruiting. Either they are coming or not coming. There's no reason for fans or people who support the university to be concerned. They gave us their word they are coming. If an article keeps them from coming, of course it'd be disappointing but it's not anything I can control."

What?!? What happened? I thought we were done with this...Anyone have a link to the article?

jchief40 10 years, 7 months ago

If the Henrys let a friggin newspaper article affect KU which had nothing to do with that - then that's just immature.

JayCeph 10 years, 7 months ago

jchief, how right you are. It smacks of 'escapism' or scapegoating their way out of something they don't want to do (attend and play for KU). If this is the case, then the article in the Star wasn't that far off base, was it?

davelass 10 years, 7 months ago

You know Cal was texting them to make sure they read the article to use as leverage. Gotta love that one letter of intent rule.

Steve Hengeli 10 years, 7 months ago

If you can't handle criticism in the paper, then you are NOT ready to go pro.

bjacks18 10 years, 7 months ago

Does that work even if he hasn't signed his LOI yet? According to rivals he has yet to sign...

Jeff Hargate 10 years, 7 months ago

Is anyone really suprised? As I said a month ago...if they really wanted to be here they would already be here. Carl is making David Padget's dad look really good right now.

Jaminrawk 10 years, 7 months ago

And here we go again. I would think the feelings of his teammates and coaches at Kansas would be the only ones that really matter. Not some article in a Kansas City newspaper.

CatsCatsCats 10 years, 7 months ago

The newspaper article has NOTHING to do with this, it's an excuse! He always wanted to play for Cal, add his friend Wall to the mix, and the departure of Meeks and this is far from shocking.

craigers 10 years, 7 months ago

If they are still waffling, then Self should hand them their paperwork and say, "We don't need your services." Don't want to be in a negative light? Then do what the rest of the talented basketball team is doing...working out together and building a team!!!

jhawks8379 10 years, 7 months ago

Seriously. Can we buy them both a ticket to Europe?

Elliot Cohen 10 years, 7 months ago

Pretty sure tonight is an ultimatum. Bill Self will probably say if you aren't coming to play for me, let me know now so I can put an end to all this. If you are coming, then get your butts up to Lawrence so I can put an end to all this. Either way, make up your mind. I have faith in Bill Self to work this all out. If it does not work out in our favor, then I really hope Marcus Morris is as improved as everyone says he is.

rockchalkmillhouse25 10 years, 7 months ago

There is no way the KC Star article is what has cause this mess. I agree it makes the Henry's look bad....but if Carl would just keep quiet this would never happen. Do they think that a Lexington newspaper wouldn't have wrote a similar article if he had spoken to one of their reporters? This is just crazy!! I would love to have them play for KU, but if they don't want to be here then so be it!! We should have taken Lance problems and all when we had the chance...at least it seemed like he wanted to be a Jayhawk. The Henrys are not bigger than KU.

rockchalkmillhouse25 10 years, 7 months ago

From what I understand they have both enrolled in classes at KU. If thats the case then X would have to pay his own way to UK and CJ would have to sit out a year. If they are that dumb then let them go!

kugolfer217 10 years, 7 months ago

Good. Let them go. Who cares? We don't need them. If you don't want to be seen in a negative light then don't go shooting your mouth off Carl Henry. Stop living your life through them. They are kids. Let them do what they want to do.

irish2255 10 years, 7 months ago

Kick these crybabies to the curb. Self shouldn't even waste the gas to drive down there.

beauj 10 years, 7 months ago

Forget the Henry family and their massive egos. I prefer guys who actually have pride in being part of this institution, guys with heart like Sherron and Cole. I hope Bill cuts this ridiculous family loose.

come to Kansas and win a National Title - or - go to kentucky and not win a nothing title (and surround yourself with thousands of people that eat dirt).

up to you.

Mike Hamilton 10 years, 7 months ago

I remember writing on here that I will believe that they are Jayhawks the day I see them wearing a KU jersey in a game for KU. I dont know if we will ever see that. Yes, this is getting very old. I am sure it would be fun to watch him play for us but. . .

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 7 months ago

Don't release them from their LOI. Force them (particularly Xavier) to sit out rather than play for UK.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

We will gladly take them...we just so happen to need a 2 guard in the worst way. And it sounds like X wanted to play for us the entire time, but just went to Kansas because his parents asked him to.

I hope we can schedule a game with you guys next year or the following...

Jaminrawk 10 years, 7 months ago

Does anyone even listen to 610 Sports?

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

And also they dont have a LOI....You can only sign one, and X signed his with Memphis. He cannot sign another. He can however walk right up to our campus before class starts and be given a scholly. Thats how it works. Trust us, we know :)

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 7 months ago

The Henrys are putting themselves in a negative light!!!

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 7 months ago

Yep, I believe you are right, Wildcat _Fan...only one LOI is allowed.

Todd Mobray 10 years, 7 months ago

How can coaches go through this every year? I am tired, and I am not even involved.

One thing can take care of all of this: Carl Henry---SHUT UP. But we all know from experience that is never going to happen. No matter what happens, it is going to be very hard for me to cheer for either one of these two next year.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

This is what happens when parents become overly involved with the recruiting process. The kids want to go one place, the parents have other ideas. This is a classic example. X wanted to come to UK and play for Cal, his parents (being KU alum) wanted him to go to KU...which is completely understandable. But parents need to cut the cord and let the kids choose on their own. Otherwise this wouldnt have happened in the first place.

You all are going to be a great team and will still be the team to beat next year with or without X. Hope we meet somewhere down the road :)

kcgregory 10 years, 7 months ago

wildcat fan is right, neither has to sit out. they could play for kentucky (or anyone else) this year. we can compete for a title without them, but kentucky will certainly be the favorite.

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 7 months ago

Carl Sr. must be mulling over a lucrative asst. coaching position with Calipari.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

Naw, you all will still be preseason #1 in my opinion. We have a team loaded with super talented freshmen but only one star upperclassman (Patterson).

Like I said....whatever this drama brings, best of luck. Unless youre playing us. The Jayhawks will still be one great team with or without the Henry brothers.

KUSmurf 10 years, 7 months ago

Oh for the love of god, that article was written by someone who hates KU. Carl Henry is an idiot.

bangaranggerg 10 years, 7 months ago

Rupp was your sloppy seconds too Kentucky

jayhawkr34 10 years, 7 months ago

I read the article in the star, i have followed this whole thing. These kids think they are bigger than the Jayhawk BB program, theyre dad has convinced them of that. I say let them go, even if they still want to come, we dont one and done players. I 'll take a player like Darnell Jackson over a million players like these two. DJ was fun to watch mature, and make mistakes and grow from them, rather than two kids who think they are bigger than a program, and a dad whose ego is bigger than his future paychecks he is hoping his kids will give him.

Jeff Hargate 10 years, 7 months ago

Actually, X wanted to go to KU along with his parents, but CJ wanted to play for Cal. It looks like that actually might happen. If so, congratulations Kentucky! You will be getting the best point guard in America (per Carl). LAJayhawk5 - awesome post...and probably true!

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

Cant say anything bad about Kansas.....Yall gave us the greatest coach of all time, the Baron of the Bluegrass.

kansas22 10 years, 7 months ago

This is ridiculous. If you are really that sensitive because of an article in a paper (Not a Lawrence paper but a paper from a city completely separate from the one that the school is actually in) then you have some issues. Get over it. Kansas fans, coaches, and players were all going to welcome the Henry brothers with open arms regardless of the article. You know why? Because they can dribble a basketball and put it through the hoop better than a lot of players. They were (and still could I guess) going to be stars for the program. You can't let some article that "put you in a negative light" get so under your skin. This is a joke.

kcgregory 10 years, 7 months ago

i agree we have a great chance and a more experienced team (and may be ranked #1 based on established players), but NBA talent has proven to win titles (UNC, KU, FLA, FLA, UNC, UCONN, SYR, etc--just take a look at the pro talent on each of those rosters). nobody will have as much talent as Kentucky if they add Xavier and CJ.

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 7 months ago

Two more "returning" UK players are shakin' in their shoes right now, knowing that they will not be asked back for 2009/2010.

live4h2o 10 years, 7 months ago

I can't wait until their first "family meeting" and threats to leave the school after one of boys gets benched (as all first year players do) for screwing up during a game. Oh the drama!!!

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

jeff, may be true, I dont know. Ive not really followed them since they committed to KU until now....but CJ wont see the floor here. We've got two super talented point guards in Wall and Bledsoe...Wall being a one and done, like X and Cousins, and Bledsoe being a star for the next few years for us.

Jaminrawk 10 years, 7 months ago

I'm kind of speechless. I cannot remember this much drama in a recruiting season ever. The recruitment of Wall, Stephenson and the Henrys have had more twists and turns than an M. Night Shayalaman movie.

Regardless of how ever this turns out, we cannot over look that we have also got guys like EJ, Thomas Robinson and Jeff Withey coming in. I just wish recruits these days could appreciate some of these institutions BEFORE they get there. Heck, B. Rush didn't want to go to classes but even he says that he misses KU. Everyone that comes through KU leaves with a greater appreciation than they came here with. That is probably why KU has been able to avoid one and dones.

kerplunkr 10 years, 7 months ago

I love the KU team exactly the way it is. If both CJ and Xavier decide to actually play for Kansas, I wouldn't complain. However, this publicity is embarrassing for the Henry's and Kansas basketball. In my opinion, the Henry's need to "stay loose" or be "cut loose." As somebody already stated, Carl needs to watch what he says. "Loose lips sink ships."

It's interesting to see the Kentucky fans foaming at the mouth at this news. Must be a boring day in bluegrass country.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

jayhawkinatl, we actually are one under the scholly limit. we have on available for X, and CJ wont need one due to the yankees paying his way.

EnviroHawk7 10 years, 7 months ago

Whoa Wildcat_Fan_606, you actually have a brain. Thumbs Up.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

EnviroHawk7 10 years, 7 months ago

You actually have a brain compared to some other UK Fans on here. Not trying to sound mean. But thanks.

Jeff Hargate 10 years, 7 months ago

If CJ is as good as Carl thinks then he should take his Range Rover and go to Europe for a year, bank, and then get drafted. Why waste a year of earning potential if he is really that good?

Does anyone think Carl is looking for a job? Just a thought...

kerplunkr 10 years, 7 months ago

I wonder what Lance is thinking right now?

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

kerplunkr - its all college basketball, all the time here. time of the year doesnt matter. and yes, our fans are salivating over the mere possibility of this.

when we lost meeks, we lost a proven outside threat to help spread defenses and make them guard the 3. if we were to gain X, that problem would be pretty much solved.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, both our programs have those kinda trash talking fans. Trust me, a lot of Kansas fans showed up on our boards to talk crap whenever X choose KU over us. All in good fun, doesnt bother me. Not really my thing though.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

Thats whats suprising to me....if Carl or CJ think that CJ will see a second of floor time here, theyre sadly mistaken. X will start right away obviously with Meeks staying in the NBA. But we have 2 PGs that are almost certainly better than him, possibly 3 with Liggins.

Joe Templeton 10 years, 7 months ago

Im starting to wonder if Coach Self has known for quite some time that this could or would happen and has been in contact with Lance Stephenson. Word is that hes is signing with Cinci but as we all know that could change with the wind.

rockchalkmillhouse25 10 years, 7 months ago

I don't blame UK fans for being excited about possibly getting X.....you know if we had an oppurtunity to get John Wall from them we would be doing back flips. This whole situation is just crazy!! This can't be about an article that has nothing to do with the University of Kansas.

Jeff Hargate 10 years, 7 months ago

KU has 4 or 5 players at the 1 or 2 that are as good or better than CJ right now. Why would he come here or UK? My guess is that we don't know half of what is going to come from all this.

Good luck Wildcat Fan 606

tstanlick1909 10 years, 7 months ago

we dont need lance or x and lets be honest CJ is a joke, he wouldnt play at all

the henry brothers were made for kentucky, they are completely ridiculous

professor 10 years, 7 months ago

I'll help them pack their bags and drive both spoiled-brat-snot-nosed-prima-donnas to Bluegrass-ville myself. Knew all along since X pronounced his name "Ex-ah-vee-ay" instead of "Ex-ay-vee-er" that he was more into himself than he would ever be into being a Jayhawk Legacy. I hope the Henry name is once and forever more excommunicated from the annals of Jayhawk history. KU does not need their self-serving crapola.

HCBS to the Henry's: thanks but no thanks, this is what I am hoping for. I am tired of this crap and I hope Self is too.

jayhawkliz 10 years, 7 months ago

Boy are these kids spoiled! I do not know what the article in the fallen star said, but it is sad that they are such ego maniacs to let that kind of stuff effect them. Also, they were coming to a program that has a team philosphy not a me! SAD!

Robert Brock 10 years, 7 months ago

I dont even care any more. I'm ready for football season anyways.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

Some are speculating Self is going there to beg them to stay. Dont think theres any chance of that, I agree with Chris. Probably going to tell them to do what you wanna do and decide soon. Self is too good a coach and should have more pride than to go there and try to convince these kids to stay if they dont want to. Hopefully we will all know how this plays out tomorrow. Either way, both Kentucky and Kansas will be teams to beat next year and will be the top game on all their opponents schedules. Thats for certain.

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 7 months ago

We need a hall of shame at the University of Kansas, we can put Bud Moore, Terry Allen, Bob Val. and Carl in it

It doesn't make any sense for them to do this radio show unless it was likely that X would leave....Carl is about to lose his invite to the fieldhouse

Eurekahwk 10 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, I knew ALONG time ago that the Henry's were just jacking Kansas around. Come on people, he put on a Memphis hat at an ESPN press conference. By doing so, that meant he forewent giving the coach any advanced notice despite two or three years of recruiting. Lance Stephenson seemed like a great get when he was ready to commit to Kansas. He seems REALLY good now. I was afraid that the Henry's would cost us him. They have, and those guys will be a cancer to whatever team they play for.

KEITHMILES05 10 years, 7 months ago

Carl! YOU should be ashamed of yourself orchestrating this entire episode. This is by far the WORST recruiting disaster in KU BB history. You are not acting like an grown adult but a petulant brat. You are not setting a good example for your boys. You are bringing shame upon your families name and character.

Why do you not allow your boys to speak for themselves? This is all about YOU, not them.

Shameful, absolutely shameful.

whitechocolate 10 years, 7 months ago

I really enjoy this drama. From the diehard fans on the ESPN message boards who think the article was negative and a conspiracy hit-job by a Mizzou grad to those who think Lance Stephenson is holding his breath about Cincy to see how this pans out. (for the record, the writer is a Michigan alum)

Personally, the article was fine. I even felt that McCollough had worded parts to try to spin it positive. It was the facts that rubbed fans the wrong way, not the 'bias': The expensive cars. Carl's attitude about his sons being better than Taylor and Collins. The looking into Europe one month after signing.

Of course, the biggest reason for ire is that the brothers are not on campus. When every other member of the team is in town, they are not and even if they're sweating bullets under the Okie sun, they're not doing it with the team.

I thought this was baloney from the start, but if the Henry family is seriously considering switching now, then it's simply convenience. I am not going to blame the Star or McCollough for the B.S. parade. Memphis. Kentucky. Kansas. Europe. Kentucky. Heck, Bobby Petrino has shown more loyalty.

The Morris twins have been putting on weight and working out like madmen. Withey is a turning a powerlunch into food warfare. Taylor is hustling overseas representing the U.S. Johnson was proclaiming his Jayhawk pride to the Big East even before he arrived. Morningstar was quoted to be willing to give up his scholarship just to help the team. These are the kind of news that makes the fans swell with pride. Flip-flop decisions and selfish statements don't.

Bully for them if Bill and Danny can tame this circus. If not, it just means more motivation to win. I'd love to have a great team next year. But I simply can't root for someone who has no heart to put forward the effort.

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 7 months ago

Eurekahwk- do you think that the rumor that Lance is not even elegible to play in college due to the tv show that he has/had are true?

Jaminrawk 10 years, 7 months ago

It's pretty sad how something that was such a perfect fit could be going to hell because of bruised egos.

hillsborohawk 10 years, 7 months ago

OH MY ! ( sigh )

Similar to Michael Jackson news coverage. When will THIS merry go round STOP ? ? ? ? ?

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 7 months ago

These little snipits say it all:

“I don’t like stepping on people’s toes,” Carl says, “but I just know what I know. I watch them play, all the Kansas kids. I like all these kids, (Sherron) Collins, (Tyshawn Taylor), they’re good kids, man. But they’re not better than C.J.”

Really? And.....

“If he didn’t have to go to college, he wouldn’t do it,” Carl says.

That says a lot. Tell ya what Carl, just hold your boy out a year, play some street ball and then enter the draft.

And finally what it really boils down to:

"Carl lasted until 1993, bouncing around between Spain, Italy and Belgium. His young family was with him, but he didn’t bring many good basketball memories home. “It was a job,” Carl says. 'Since then, Carl has often wondered how good he could have been if he had started getting serious about basketball earlier in life. Maybe then he’d have gotten those calls from the big-time coaches, guys with reputations like Self’s."

And there you have it. Carl Henry living his unfulfilled dreams via his children. That chip on his shoulder must be getting heavy.

rockchalkmillhouse25 10 years, 7 months ago

If they didn't like the article that was written....just wait until you choose not to come to KU. They will be bashed left and right.

Jaminrawk 10 years, 7 months ago

If they don't like scrutiny, then they are going to HATE Kentucky. UK fans and media are the most critical in all of college basketball.

Wildcat_Fan_606 10 years, 7 months ago

Jaminrawk, youre right. If he thinks the Star article was bad...Then Id hate for him to meet Jerry Tipton and Mark Story. They are plagues on our basketball program.

hillsborohawk 10 years, 7 months ago

The Henry's parents must have missed the June "Parent Child Camp for ages 4-7" discussion about "Parenting your young athlete and letting kids be kids, parents be parents and coaches be coaches."

rockchalkmillhouse25 10 years, 7 months ago

Thats a good point Jaminrawk. Kentucky fans are every bit as critical if not more so than KU. This situation is just nuts!! Its plain and simple either you want to be a Jayhawk or you don't!

rockchalkmillhouse25 10 years, 7 months ago

I doubt that Self was told that he was just coming because of Barbara not wanting to go to Lexington. I think that if he knew this situation was a possibility he would have taken Lance.

ObiWan 10 years, 7 months ago

This is a prime example of why players and those that love them (their fathers, for example) should stay away from the message boards!

tstanlick1909 10 years, 7 months ago

I would love to see sherron play CJ in a game of one on one. Im not apposed to Lance at this time, I think his recruiting catastrophe has knocked him down a few pegs, and besides, he is a great talent from the hood similar to Russell Robinson and our man Sherron

Bring him in

Jaminrawk 10 years, 7 months ago

CJ's quote after both kids committed to KU:

"We're very close. It's going to be fun to play with my brother," C.J. said. "It wasn't going to happen at Memphis. I think Kansas is a good place for us. It's where (Xavier) wanted to go in the first place. It will be a great experience. It will be fun."

Ok, so if Xavier wanted to go to Kansas in the first place, then why is Carl now saying he wanted to go to UK in the first place? I don't get it.

JayJayPG 10 years, 7 months ago

It just seems to me that the KC Star article is just an "out" (and a poor one at that) for wanting to publicly announce their intentions to look elsewhere. If the Henry's are looking to see how much begging/pleading they are going to get from the fanbase at the University of Kansas to come play basketball here, they are going to be pretty disappointed. It's a two way street. The more you show us you want to be here and how much it means to you to put on a Jayhawk, the more love/respect you will see from the fans (see Thomas Robinson and Elijah Johnson).

truefan 10 years, 7 months ago

This is bad. We really need both of those guys. When I read the KC Star article I had the feeling that it was purposely being written to spin everything that he had to say in a bad light. For example, when he decided not to answer the phone call from Coach Self, he most likely didn't want to be rude to the guy interviewing him, it's common knowledge that you don't answer your phone at dinner or in the middle of an interview. The writer made it sound like he was too good to answer the call when he was probably just being polite, plus he decided to call him right back. I think we should stop being angry with the Henry's and ask for the head of the reporter who wrote the story. If he costs us these recruits and our shot at another title, I'll boycott that paper for the rest of my life.

UKnKU 10 years, 7 months ago

The Henry's sound cancerous. Seems all UK and KU really want is solid winning basketball programs with players that want to rep the schools they chose. Sure miss pure basketball!

Lance Hobson 10 years, 7 months ago

If you don't want negative press then step up and do the right things. Like being with your team and being responsible. These guys are everything KU is not about and everything that "one and dones" have been about since that ill-fated program was created. They are too self-absorbed to blend well at KU. Basketball is a team game and these guys are expecting the royal treatment before they've even stepped on the court.

The entire issue with these three is a trian wreck. UK is on a road for disaster and getting these guys is the last thing they need.

notigers4me 10 years, 7 months ago

I read the article as well. There was nothing in there that could be considered negative except what perhaps Daddy Henry said. He said the boys were as good as any of our current players are now. That may or may not be true, however the bottom line is they are not at KU. It seems that when you give someone your word that it ought to mean something. Hopefully Xavier and CJ. are men or their word and they will do the right thing and get their rears up here and go to work.

tstanlick1909 10 years, 7 months ago

Good point truefan,

I thought your take on the phone call was spot on, thats what I took from it too

That writer had no business writing an article like that, it was offensive to the Henry family and it questioned their integrity. If I were Carl I would be pissed too

That writer, and a poor one at that, should be burned

UKnKU 10 years, 7 months ago

As a UK fan,I am scared to death of the Henry boys and the looming problems if they do arrive on campus.

kugolfer217 10 years, 7 months ago

Here is the way I see it:

Bill Self recruits team players. Look at Russell Robinson, Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun and others, they were not stars. They did what was asked of them. What did that get Kansas; a national title. Xavier would be great to have, but I feel he will not be a one and done at Kansas because we play team basketball. Coach Cal will give the ball to him so he is a one and done. They won't win a title.

With this is mind, I hope Self lays out two options:

  1. Come to Kansas-You play my way which is team basketball.

  2. If you don't like it, then I do not have a spot for you on my TEAM.

As for C.J., I don't think he would be bad to have because he hasn't played organized basketball in four years. He will be good, but come on Carl don't put added pressure on your son who hasn't played basketball for four years. Let him improve and become a great player.

Kansas is not a one and done program and I think this will help recruits understand we want to win championships with a team atmosphere. Honestly, I see this helping our recruiting in the future.

jdhawk97 10 years, 7 months ago

Just listened to the podcast. I know Carl Henry has said some things he probably shouldn't have, but he sounded pretty exasperated himself during that interview. I didn't feel like he blamed the article for causing Xavier to change his mind, but I think, rather, that he was mad at himself for being so trusting of that reporter who then portrayed him less than favorably. It sounds like Xavier's "friends" at Kentucky have been in his ear, and since he's not in Lawrence, he's not surrounded by his teammates who would surely allay his concerns about playing at KU. After their family meeting tonight, I do expect him to play for Kentucky next year, which may actually be the best for all involved. KU basketball is much bigger than one (or two) one-year players.

I have been one of the few who have thought this entire time that Stephenson was who we should go after. I dont think Xavier and C.J. are dumb....but their dad is an IDIOT!!! They obviously love him and listen to him too much. This family circus needs to take down their tent and not put it back up til the draft next year. kthxbai.

Tribehawk 10 years, 7 months ago

I hate turning my back on an alum, but in this case, Carl turned his back on us first. I don't think it was malicious, but it was wreckless at the very least. Good-bye Carl. Have fun turning your family into the Henry Globetrotters.

Goodbye Henry's. Hello Lance. Lance has been waiting for these two idiot's to decide to ruin their chance at playing for KU. Lance will jump all over this.

JayJayPG 10 years, 7 months ago

And now the truth comes out (article has been updated)...

truefan 10 years, 7 months ago

Thanks tstanlick1909, I'm just tired of sports writers purposely writing drama articles like this just to sell some papers. If you ask me, Carl Henry probably enjoyed the interview and didn't feel that he said anything wrong, but it's all about how you write the article. By starting the story with a "storybook" and a "real life" take he immediately prepared everyone who read the article to hate the Henry's. His tone implied how people should feel after reading the article and therefore everyone that commented had something negative to say which further angered the Henry family. Now they are going to go to UK and we are screwed next season. Don't get me wrong, we have good players, but without a go-to 3 man, we have greatly reduced our chances at winning the title. The worste part is that this J. Brady McCollough is one of our own Alumn, what an idiot.

Justin Diederich 10 years, 7 months ago

Goodbye Henry's. Hello Lance. Lance has been waiting for these two to decide to ruin their chance at playing for KU. Lance will jump all over this.

hirschtodd 10 years, 7 months ago

I'm DONE! Enough already. Good bye and good riddance (sp?) to the Henry Family. This is what you get when you make a deal with the OAD devil. Not worth it. Go to Kentucky...go to europoe...go wherever you want...just stay out of Lawrence. We are above this nonsense...and Self has the Ring and the credibility to tell them to stuff it. ....I wonder what the Spodcasters think about this?

cobweb 10 years, 7 months ago

Why anyone would want to coach guys like T.O., Manny Ramirez or the Henry brothers is beyond me. Coaches need to grow some * and tell these guys to take a hike. The team will be better without them.

Eric Williams 10 years, 7 months ago

I don't see how UK will prosper from this.

Wall - OAD X Henry - OAD Cousins - OAD Patterson - Done after season

Bench C.J. Henry Bledsoe Orton

And others...

Remember there is only ONE basketball and Wall, Henry, Patterson and Cousins all want it to IMPROVE their draft status.

There is a very small possibility that a UK lineup like that would mesh at all.

JayJayPG 10 years, 7 months ago

Guarantee you Calipari has been hounding Orton, Cousins, and Wall to try to get Xavier on the phone to get him to come to UK.

Todd Mobray 10 years, 7 months ago

UK is a great choice over KU for a thin skinned family like the Henrys. UK fans never complain about their players or coaches.

Tubby Smith left because Minnesota is so much more of a basketball hotbed than Kentucky. The fans never complained about him. How could they, he won a National Championship and made the big dance every year.

Meeks was crying all the way to the middle of the second round because he was going to miss all that Big Blue support he got after not scoring 54 points every game and leading the team deep into the NIT.

Heck, the administration even let the team play in town, (not in Rupp of course) for their home game in the small dance.

It seems to me we may be dodging a bullet here if they are dumb enough to switch again. Two names keep popping in my head when I hear about the Henrys - Lester Earl and JaRon Rush. Neither one of them was good for the program. We dodged a bullet on one, and took a hit on the other.

Carl is the worst of 4 worlds. An AAU coach, a meddling father who spoils his kids as he says he is being tough on them, a frustrated stage mom (dad), and a guy with no filter who cant say no to an interview.

I try to avoid reading these posts let alone contributing because this message board has become a serious problem. News Flash: Recruits read these posts! If you don’t believe me you need to read this article about how Bo Ryan and Wisconsin lost a big time recruit because he felt like that fans hated him after reading their schools message board http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/story/11776517 There are a handful of @$$ holes who get on hear and bash 18 year old kids based on nothing but rumors and speculation. Those of you know who you are and you are grossly misrepresenting KU’s true fans and embarrassing the school and yourselves. None of us have enough info to make statements about these kids character. X has never had anything but great things to say about KU and numerous times has expressed how much he loves it here. Now, after one erroneous article he can get on here and read how all the fans “never wanted him in the first place.” I hope you jerks are happy, you may have played a big role in losing two of the best recruits KU has EVER had (make no mistake about, CJ is the real deal too). X, CJ I hope you boys realize that most of the people posting here are top shelf @#$* and if/when you finally make it to Lawrence you will find that the REAL Jayhawk fans have nothing but love for you. Now head on up here and let’s have some fun wining the NC next year!

Worst case scenario is we lose them. But we still have Lance on the market. If we will deal with him

What a stupid article. Trading team mates like Collins and Alridge for freshmen John Wall & Cousins? Think again...

Jason Musick 10 years, 7 months ago

Bill Self gave up on Lance Stevenson, to get these guys. I think if they (X and CJ) not decide to come, it would be blow but, I still like the Jayhawks chances of winning the National title this season.

Everyone is back, they are going to be so much better. It is going to be a magical season.

Rock Chalk, Jhawk go KU

Seems like dad is more of an influence than previously thought... They seem very clicky but hopefully they can open up to their teammates. Dad seems to think he knows everything...Kansas gave him a chance and this is how he repays his alma mater?? Come on dude your son may or may not make it in the NBA. That is a fact. Let him come to kansas and test himself against the best. As you know not but one person in the history of the entire state has gone PRO from Oklahoma. So odds are highly stacked against you. But kansas would love to have your services just let go a bit and let the boys leave the nest....

It's taking all I have to NOT post about this but please, everyone, reread this statement from BILL SELF himself:

Self said because of the "article and blogs and people commenting on the article, the family is very upset and concerned about how they'd be treated in Lawrence."

The fact of the matter is, we all need to shut up and let this play out. If there's one man in College BB that can handle this, it's Bill. Like it or not, we do need the Henry brothers. To what degree is up for debate, but it is very clear that Captain Self wants the blogging nightmare to stop. Maybe LJ World could disable this temporarily? I mean, if you hit refresh on your browser, there's like 8 new posts.

Just hope the damage isn't already done.

SoCalAlum 10 years, 7 months ago

From above L-W report: Self said because of the "article and blogs and people commenting on the article, the family is very upset and concerned about how they'd be treated in Lawrence."

Point #1: Scary to note that relevant people (that is, players and their families) read and are influenced by comments on blogs like this. Point #2: X and CJ (and their parents) were shown extraordinary affection and respect once they committed to KU...and would still get that affection if they honored their commitment -no doubt about it.

Just have to wonder if Lance was holding out all this time because Coach Self told him there was an outside chance that X might end up bailing on KU. Personally, (and with no disrespect to the Henrys who are reading this), I wanted Lance for KU...if anyone would be able to control and mentor him, I'd bet on Sherron.

kugolfer217 10 years, 7 months ago

hydohawk...I don't disagree, but I talked about his father. I personally believe he isn't off limits because he does not let his own kids speak for themselves.

kerplunkr 10 years, 7 months ago

'"A couple weeks ago, my youngest son (Xavier) tells me he wanted to go to Kentucky. Said he's thinking about it,' Carl told the station."

"the family is very upset and concerned about how they'd be treated in Lawrence."

If you keep spouting off comments like these Carl, your family better be concerned! Why would KU want a player who treats the school as second-best?

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 7 months ago

Once again Carl Henry is all over the place in a radio interview saying one thing and then saying another big suprise. Also I just heard that President Obama has decided to not be president of the United States and will instead become the President of another country yet to be determined. Evidently he had already signed a letter of intent so it will just be a verbal to that other country.

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 7 months ago

Socalalum-I hope you are right about the Lance situation but I think that is very wishful thinking that Lance was holding out. He may be now but I dont think he has been holding out all of this time. Who knows though, this thing has been a soap opera so anything could be going on. Has anyone heard anything regarding Lance's eligibility issues due to the television show that he has/had?

rockchalkjayhawk4ku11 10 years, 7 months ago

I don't want them. I've read the KC star article many times. The big thing that makes me REALLY disappointed, is that they are not working out with the team yet! I know Xavier may be good friends with Daniel Orton and John Wall, but how the hell are you suppose to make new friends if you won't practice with the team?! One thing is for sure, we will be one of the top national championship contenders whether we have them, or not.

Jeff Hargate 10 years, 7 months ago

Can you imagine the support Xavier would have recieved if he would have been part of any interview and said "...it stinks I can't be up in Lawrence because of my root canal, but you can be sure that I will be in Lawrence come August 100% ready to win a national Championship." This blog would have blown up with twice as many positive posts.

Instead we get an article saying Self needs to get on board with the Henry plan.

Bad taste/feeling about the whole situation. We do not need Lance or his baggage either. Have faith in Self...he will defintely let them know where he stands!

KWufan 10 years, 7 months ago

Wow. The article is fine, it just reports the facts. Carl said X doesnt' want to do classes because he's an NBA talent. Nothing unusual there, happens with all these great athletes. He's mad because of the criticism from area bloggers. Look, your going to get criticism in this day and age, if you don't like it, don't let your son go to the NBA because he's going to be criticized. This is being blown way out of proportion. Also, we have a great team no matter what, yes it would be even better with both the Henry boys and I would love to see the family aspect of it played out because their parents went here. That would just be cool, but who cares about preseason number 1 anyway. I want the NC instead of that garbage ranking.

Tony Bandle 10 years, 7 months ago

Wildcat_Fan_606

First, let me complement you on your sense of rationality and good sportsmanship. We are both part of the greatest progams in America [North Carolina grudgingly included as the third] and appreciate the joy our teams bring to us.

The bottom line is these young men need to do what they think is best for themselves. We all have the right to our opinions but we've mostly made our life choices...now it's their turns.

Their is no question that with the addition of the Henry's, UK climbs into NC contention with KU. The one attribute that can't be recruited is experience.

KU has NCAA and National Championship experience throughout the roster. KU has potentially two All-Americans. KU's duo of Self and Manning cannot be matched by UK.

In the end, I think this will be the difference.......actually, this is all Division One needed for the upcoming year....A pi$$ed off Jayhawk team out to prove themselves!!!

rockchalkmillhouse25 10 years, 7 months ago

This is stupid! They will get the same and possibly more criticism from the UK fans and media. I would love to have Xavier....but come on! Either you want to be here or you don't. Which is it? Enough is enough already.

Do you even watch KU basketball?

Martin Rosenblum 10 years, 7 months ago

If Carl thinks his boys are a gift to basketball, why didn't he push them into the NBA draft this year? It was one of the weakest fields that I can remember and surely Xavier would have gone in the first round if he's such a talent that he can change his mind on where he wants to go to school for one year, or two semesters, and everybody should bend over backwards waiting on him while he flip-flops on a daily basis!

Do they think that his association with a college program for one season will improve his game or what? Calipari will undoubetdly provide the customary perks that they couldn't get at KU. Makes you wonder about Derrick Rose's interest in being with Cal for just one year. In this case, however, the issue of the Henry parents being KU alums and allowing this circus to continue is just disgusting. Bob Fredricks is probably rolling in his grave right now at the thought of such foolishness!

Craig Lang 10 years, 7 months ago

Just based on the buzz surrounding this story, I am guessing the Henrys are going to Kentucky. I would rather they stay here, but if they want to go there, then apparently it's a choice they can make and us fans will have to live with it. Lance Stephenson has committed to Cincy, so he's out of the picture. Doesn't matter, the Jayhawks are still a national-caliber team.

And let's say the Henrys go to UK instead of KU, and the teams meet in the national championship. Sherron Collins will no doubt remember what was said about him by Mr. Henry in that article...and I think that will motivate Sherron on the court, which will give KU the advantage.

K_Easthouse 10 years, 7 months ago

First, memhawk, X couldn't have jumped; eligibility rules. Welcome to college hoops, you've now discredited everything you will ever post here.

Second, for whatever this circus has become, I trust Self's judgment. If these kids decide to come to Lawrence, we'll embrace them as much as they embrace us. Look at E. Johnson and Robinson, they show us some love, and we give it right back tenfold. If you can let go of your own egos, you'll have family for life here in Lawrence.

Heck, when Harrison Barnes played here in a summer league tournament, we were gushing over him and his respect for the program.

You show the program the respect it deserves, and we'll love you forever. If you keep up the "I've got to get mine" attitude, I suspect many fans will laugh as the door hits your butt on the way out.

MinnesotaJay 10 years, 7 months ago

X can grow up now, and honor his word. Or, he can put off growing up until another day.

Unfortunately, even if he (or they) come to KU, team chemistry may be put in jeopardy. It was great last year, and it seems like it will be again without them.

I was thrilled when X 'committed,' but that was when I thought he actually wanted to be in Lawrence. It's a p*sser that Kentucky will be ridiculously loaded if the boys flip for the last time, but if their commitment was as flimsy as it now appears, then maybe they aren't worth it.

It's shocking to me that their folks didn't rein this in when they first starting getting wind of it.

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 7 months ago

lalawguy-when did Lance commit to Cinci? No recruiting site has him committed to Cinci, no verbal, no loi, nothing. Do you mean he is committed in his mind? In fact rivals does not even have Cinci on Lance's list.

KU_Mitch 10 years, 7 months ago

sps3334 , Yes I do, never miss a game....but I am pretty old, So forgive me. I forgot Quintrell transfered. duh.

Dear X and CJ, If this article and/or fan comments in all of the blogs are turning your head away, just remember. Some blogs are written by enemy fans, i.e. guess who: mizzou, ksu, and now uk! You will get the same smak wherever you go. Stop second guessing yourselves and keep your commitment! You were born Jayhawks. Tell Mr. Wall and Mr. Orton you'll see them in the finals and let it go at that. It's time to be your own man, men. Rock Chalk!

kw11b2p 10 years, 7 months ago

Alright, I know I shouldn't do it, but after reading all these posts I just have to give my two cents and be blatently honest....

  1. Calipari is a scum bag, and I have no doubt he been pressuring his guys to try and lure the Henrys to UK, he has no class and I believe this move will end up biting him in his greasy trashball a@#.

  2. If this were still the Roy era (and I'm not saying I wish it were....love Self), I believe he would have told them to take their a#$es and their egos to UK. I hope and believe Self will do the same.

  3. KU does not need players like this. This is a sign of things to come. Regardless of the outcome Self must make it known that he does not bend to will or egos of players and that KU is a team which is bigger than any one or two players.....if they don't like it then tuff tatas.

I really think this could be a blessing for KU. By the way, any statement that CJ is better or even as good as Sherron and Tyshawn is absolutely, positively, ridiculously idiotic. That tells you everything you need to know about this guy...he lives another world........probably located somewhere up his own @#$.

Martin Rosenblum 10 years, 7 months ago

K Easthouse - I think the "respect" that we should be shown by the Henry's has long since passed.

We will embrace our players, who embrace the spirit, legacy and traditions of our program/lifestyle. I don't personally believe that they have fully embraced this concept. Nor, do I believe that there will be more than lukewarm acceptance of their presence if the "final" decision is to be Kansas Jayhawks. It's funny how we strangely feel loose connections to those players who did wear the uniform in Lawrence and went on to to other schools for what ever reasons. We might have bid them not so much of a fond farewell when they left. But we didn't go through such ordeals before they came on board with us. In this case, there are no footprints on the floor at AFH from anybody with the last name of Henry and we were to accept one reason being that X had just had his braces removed and wouldn't be here until school started. Now, because of some "fan's comments, etc. they might jump ship! Does that sound like embracement and respect to you?

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 7 months ago

Let the ego-maniacs go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm saying it right now...the Henrys are going to kill the team chemistry we ALREADY have!!!!! If they come to KU, their egos will prevent us from winning the national title!!!!!

Coach Self...do not sell out the university or the history of KU b-ball for these two sorry a$$e$!!!!!!! Keep your dignity coach!!!!!!

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 7 months ago

memhawk-IF fans comments made them jump ship then these "kids" have lived in a sheltered world their whole lives where only Barney plays on the television. By the way Carl Henry as well as his wife both played at KU so yes the last name Henry has played at the University of Kansas.

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 7 months ago

Our returning five, plus the incoming stellar class that has already shown up on campus, will not lose to a bunch of prima donna, one-and-dones in the title game (that is if UK makes it that far, of course)!!!!!

truefan 10 years, 7 months ago

Everyone who is judging the Henrys is making a snap judgement without any facts. Luck for you, I have dug up some actual facts to back up my comments from before. Listen to this clip from the Kansas City Star and listen to what Carl Henry actually has to say about the situation. He is not angry at KU fans, he is angry at the sports writer who completely shifted what he had to say. In fact, he even points out the phone situation that I commented on earlier by saying, "I didn't answer the phone because I was in the middle of the interview" and that jerk writer made it seem like he was acting too good to talk to Coach Self which is NOT TRUE. Carl sounds like a nice guy and a fair guy and he spoke with Xavier and CJ and told them that he would rather they not back out on their commitment to KU, but he also says that they have not signed LOIs and therefore he cannot stop them from changing their minds. I wish people would do some research before they open their mouths. http://www.kansascity.com/static/audio/henry_audio_063009.mp3

kw11b2p 10 years, 7 months ago

Calipari sucks, just thought I'd get that out there

kkoenig 10 years, 7 months ago

zagsblog:

"Perhaps fearing the worst, Kansas coaches reached out to Brooklyn Lincoln guard Lance Stephenson within the last week.

But Stephenson has signed a financial aid agreement with Cincinnati of the Big East, a story first reported by SNY.tv on Tuesday.

Ironically, Kansas, which once had its choice of Stephenson or Henry, may now end up with neither."

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 6 months ago

kkoenig- I am curious to why Rivals does not even have Cinci as a school of interest for Lance?

CD2010 10 years, 6 months ago

Xavier has signed a financial aid agreement at KU, but that doesn't stop him from jumping ship. With no LOI, Lance could do the same thing if he were so inclined.

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 6 months ago

CD2010-When my father (granted this was in 67 so things have probabally changed) signed his letter of intent to play at KU there was also a financial aid agreement within the letter of intent document itself. Has anyone seen or signed a Big 12 or Big East loi or aid ageement to actually know how it works now or what the documents look like. I am assuming that the documents have changed quite a bit. Anyone have any insight?

trmatlock 10 years, 6 months ago

I don't think KU has ever had players with such an apparent lack of character. Maybe they would be happier at Kentucky. Calipari with his questionable recruiting practices has shown himself to be the same way over the years.

The Jayhawks are not a program that has to beg or cheat to get quality players. Nor have we had to deal with wishy/washy cry babies.

Let's not start now.

Dyrk Dugan 10 years, 6 months ago

i think everyone should just take a deep breath. this might be all ado about nothing.

the only thing that reflects negatively in the KC star article is Carl Henry's attitude. it sounds like it's all aboutt him. it has nothing to do with the kids....it's him. refusing to talk to Self when he calls. "i guess i better call him back..." ....good grief.

he's a former Jayhawk for cryin out loud...a little respect. he's not the one moving up here. his kids drive big cars, they're talking about playing in Europe for $1 million ....i mean c'mon! do you think we're all just in awe up here in hick land?!?

a little humility please. that's all we're asking. you'll be well received...but you have to respect the school and the fans a bit.

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 6 months ago

trmatlock- How about Giddins, Giles, and B.J. Williams. You just never know what you are going sometimes when you recruit someone.

kvskubball 10 years, 6 months ago

Wow, what a drama. I think CJ and X would be great at KU, but if they want to go somewhere else, they have the ability to make that choice.

As a KU fan, I feel that this is really weird, the way a KU alumnus (Papa Carl) seems to be jerking his alma mater around, whether it has been intentional or not.

Good luck to CJ and X, wherever they play. I still hope that will be at KU. But if they really don't want to play here, then please don't come.

kvskubball 10 years, 6 months ago

chrishauser...

Rivals doesn't always have the latest developments posted. Lance to Cinci is very new. Hadn't heard anything about it before today...

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 6 months ago

kvskubball- Do you know what he has signed and if it is binding. I personally dont think we will get anyone if the Henry's dont stay. It would be a good oppertunity to give a walk on a scholarship for this year.

KWufan 10 years, 6 months ago

Whew, what a day. Look, it's obvious Xavier never wanted to be here on his own. He just wanted to make mom and pops happy. Here's something else to think about, why did X go from number 1 in his class to number 8? Regression of game, he's not as athletically dominant against the rest of the land as he was, shoot's WAY to many 3's from NBA range in AAU ball. Let him go. You need a coach to win a NC and we all know how good a coach Cal really is. Free throws won't hurt us he said. THEY DID!! Kentucky can have all the 18 yr old immature talent they want, it guarantees nothing. There's only been one fab 5 and it worked because C Webb was so much more dominant than the rest of college basketball at the time, the talent is much more spread out now. And what do you think will happen if we do play Kentucky in the tourney. I know one thing, WE will be much more focused to beat them because of this crap and the I'm better than Sherron talk. WE will have the chip on our shoulder not them. And WE will have the experience to not freak out in a big time game. Take that to the bank, we have the edge no matter what!!

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 6 months ago

Watching UK this year (especially if X ends up there) will be very similar to watching a McDonalds game...very undisciplined and sloppy (with all the OADs worrying solely about getting his). That kind of b-ball will not win a title, not even an SEC one!!!!!!

trmatlock 10 years, 6 months ago

chrishouser20- Also Micah Downs and Padgett- but that was a coaching change scenario.

mjlindsm 10 years, 6 months ago

Sounds like Carl is the one who is mad about the article and so he's now running his mouth saying that Xavier always wanted Kentucky, though before him and CJ were saying he always wanted Kansas.

However, put yourself in the Henry kids' shoes. If you go on here and look at what everyone just wrote, wouldn't you instantly decommit? I would. I've never seen this kind of hatred for a Kansas commit who hasn't stepped on the court. Who on Earth is thick-skinned enough to want to come to Kansas after reading these things about themselves? A rational person would say, "if they are like this when I haven't even played yet, what happens if I do something wrong on the court?" Who would want to face that? In other words, if Xavier decommits, I think my fellow Kansas fans may have run off the missing piece to another National Championship. That's pathetic.

kansas22 10 years, 6 months ago

All of Lawrence would treat the Henry family with nothing but kindness because this is a town absolutely crazy about basketball. The Henry brothers would make the home team that much better, so of course they would be treated well. Carl being worried about how they'd be treated once they got to Lawrence? Are you serious? If you are worried about being treated like gods then, yes, you should be worried. Otherwise, absolutely nothing to worry about except hard work, classes, and winning a LOT of basketball games. I hope X and CJ come, we could use them both.

trmatlock 10 years, 6 months ago

Carl- How did the fans and citizens treat you and your wife when you were at KU?

Michael Bratisax 10 years, 6 months ago

This is so ridiculous. His feelings are hurt? Do we really need this crap? Sign Stevenson and tell the Henry's to enjoy Kentucky until Calipari gets them investigated for NCAA violations.

michaelaho 10 years, 6 months ago

The Henry's make me want to take a shower. I don't think they're worth this trouble. They already think they're bigger than the program & will split the locker room. I say KU cuts these flakes. I'd rather be respectful, than win like that dirtball Caliparii. What NBA GM/Owner would feel comfortable about these kids commitment to winning. Carl Henry sounds like Michael Jackson's dad.

kw11b2p 10 years, 6 months ago

MJLINDSM

Come on, seriously. You actually believe that this story is the reason for the sudden change of heart. The story hadn't posted when the two decided that being in Lawrence and preparing for the upcoming season with the rest of the TEAM wasn't a priority. QUESTION: Who here thinks that if Cole Aldrich or EJ had their braces removed, had recently been mugged and beaten and their dog just died that would not still have been on campus to work with the team. This is an issue of committment, which is seriously lacking, in an individual who would choose not to go to school if he didn't have to. This whole debacle is simply an excuse to justify the indecisivenss and immaturity of an entire family who obviously does not take the words integrity, character, and committment to heart

i'm hoping to see the following headline later tonight. BREAKING NEWS: KANSAS ENDS RECRUITMENT OF HENRY BOYS. if they don't want to be here i don't want to see them in a kansas uniform.

IdDoAnything2Win 10 years, 6 months ago

Here we go again. First Derrick Rose and his brother and now we have Xavier Henry and his brother. Its just Calipari working his slick magic again. Go ahead, take the brothers from us because we'll be taking that title from you in April and thats all that really matters. Rock Chalk!

kw11b2p 10 years, 6 months ago

Further more, In my opinion, Self's contact with the family should have been in the form of a single phone call saying that this is obviously a sign of your level of committment to this historical program and I wish you well at UK..........Peace out.

I bet Roy would!!!!!!!!!

Also, I have not seen traffic like this on the site in quite some time. Good or Bad it makes me proud to be a Jayhawk seeing this level of passion about how phenominal program. Rock Chalk

mjlindsm 10 years, 6 months ago

First off, if any other recruit ever was talked about this in this way, they would certainly decommit if they have human emotions. If you want someone without emotions (which I gather from many of you who ridicule the possibility of thier 'feelings being hurt'), then I would think you would still want them.

Look at it this way. What do we want as fans? An honest program that goes about things the right way, within the rules, and with class, and WINS. You get wins by getting the best talent and pieces. If someone hurts team chemistry, we have a good enough coach that he will bench him, throw him off the team, or handle it. Xavier helps us to achieve our goals as there is nothing foul with getting him and he would help us WIN. So everyone needs to stop being so arrogant in thinking that we don't need talent as long as we have players that are loyal and really love us. It sounds like the emotional cry babies here are the fans.

Be rational and logical, think about what you want to achieve, and don't do things that harm you attaining that goal. Fits into this situation as well as it does for anything in life.

Tribehawk 10 years, 6 months ago

If the Henry's decommit, it will be a blessing in disguise. I predict Jayhawk Nation will circle the wagons--fans and players--and the our guys will play the entire year with a chip on their collective shoulders. Our chemistry will be tight--tighter than it ever would be with X and CJ on the roster--and we will be on a mission to prove that TEAMs win championships, not individuals. At this point, if the brothers stay, I think we'll be lucky to have any kind of team chemistry at all. Having millionaires who are reluctant to practice with their teammates on a roster shoulder to shoulder with young men who are struggling to keep their families together or worried about supporting an unemployed parent will breed nothing but animosity through the ranks. See L.A. Galaxy and Mr. David Beckham.

Big. Fat. Whatever.

This is a non-story to me. The real story on this team is Sherron and Cole returning and the development (physical and mental) of our freshmen and roleplayers.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 6 months ago

mjlindsm - one major component of a program is commitment. Many negative things were said by upset fans regarding Collins' mistakes when we lost last season. He is still here, commited. The negativity here comes from the wishy washy recruiting process and X staying in okc to have "braces" removed.

Negative or positive comments written in the KC Star should not make or break one's decision to attend the University of Kansas.

The truth? Who knows. Kentucky fans have been trying to do everything they can to get the Henry's. Numerous UK fans have been on this site today trying to get people to bash the Henry's. Look back at it. When have those inbreds ever been so cordial. Many have been coaxed into a rolling ball of negativity. I'm tempted. Just trying to hold back.

Christopher Hauser 10 years, 6 months ago

I guess I just dont understand the thought process of an 18 year old who grew up with a father who played at KU not wanting to go to the same school. My father was a student athlete at KU and if I would have been blessed enough to have been offered to play a sport at The University of Kansas it would have been a dream come true. I just dont understand the thought process. With or without the Henry's, The University of Kansas will still be The University of Kansas.

This has Coach Cal written all over it. His recruits calling ours. Got to think he is in the loop on this Cal will soon be exposed as the next Kelvin Sampson.

yeah, Calipari sucks............I may have said that before

Brett Glover 10 years, 6 months ago

Hi everyone.

Who knows if that article was the cause, I don't. It could be or it could not be, I for one think that we should quit posting anything negative about that family on this site that they CAN SEE!!!! I don't know about you all but I don't want to be the one that has the power to change the next season dramatically therefore I'm not posting anything that is negative or that can be percieved, I know you all want to vent on here because you want nothing better than for us to be the best we can be, and I know that all this stress is causing it.

I think we all need to quit talking about it on here, I know you all are like "why the hell should we do what you say" and I understand that but think of how this message thread looks from the families point of view..... not very good...... So please, just think about it.

We can always talk about Missouri ;)

Chris Bruning 10 years, 6 months ago

hard to say anything negative about henry bros....cuz i know if they come to lawrence im an automatic fan....but hurry up late night....cant wait for another 30+win season and indianapolis...hopefully next year harrison barnes or other top recruits won't be so soap opera.

Gil Ek 10 years, 6 months ago

Go to UK and get your $$$ and 300S for dad. You brought this all on yourself. Grow up. Afraid your minutes might not be so great. Every minute on the court is earned in practice. Coach Self owes you 0 minutes. OAD's don't deserve AFH. Anyone who has one cent of desire for a character like Calipari should go there. James Naismith demands better.

Brett Glover 10 years, 6 months ago

See, contrary to what people think, people do care about what other people say about them, even if it's screen names on a university athletic site, I know I would want to see what the die hard fans of the university I was thinking of attending were saying about me, believe I'm prettyu miffed about it too but these negative comments bashing on cal or kentucky is just going to hurt in the long run...

... Jaybate?? concurrence??

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

In the worlds of teh grateful dead.....

What a long strange trips it's been......

after all the Calipari mess started.... i was one of the first welcome these young kids on board... now im not so sure..... and here's where i am not so sure....

Because no one is talking to the kids.... and the kids aren't speaking their minds.... their parents are talking.... their parents are talking an awful lot.... and i hope that's what Bill Self finds out tonight.....

Im pretty sure, self will say something like.... Ok... i ignored the supposed false overtures towards Kentucky.... I ignored the fact that you didn't want to come to summer school.... I over looked you SBings us about the braces..... and a root canal....

Where do you kids want to go ? europe ? Kentucky ? memphis ? Kansas ?

Ok... here's what I ( stillspeaking as bill self ) require.... I require you to get your asses ( yes asses.... these are times for harsh measures ) up to Lawrence and start meeting with your teammates.... WE have been willing to wait you guys out and let you do your own thing... knowing you will play our way or not play at all once the season comes...... but now it's getting a bit ridiculous..... i want to know where you are going.... and what your plans are..... because we will not get on board with YOUR plans.... You will get on BOARD with ours.... Carl, You played here.... you know how this works...... if you forgot that, maybe you need to look in the mirror..... No matter WHERE your boys go, they will be dogged by this now.... every media outlet that can and will trash them...will until they STAND STRONG for what they really want...... We passed on Lance Stephenson for you because w wanted you more, we believed you fit our TEAM better...... and now you want to leave because wall and orton say that calipari's got a better system for you ...... Stick with a commitment, either way boys.... the decision is yours..... Come on Danny.....

I hope he walks out the door..... and when carl henry dials his number, he hits ignore.....

part of me wants to see these kids become men at kansas.....

part of me wants to see them to continue to be boys at kentucky.....

X and CJ..... the choice is yours..... because your parents have created a hell of a media firestorm for you ..... you have the floor.....

kupark 10 years, 6 months ago

I'm not surprised at all, at all. It just didn't seem like X and CJ were interested in KU. If X does change his mind the NCAA needs to amend its rules.

Of course it would be best to have X but I think we are still the favorites to win it all even without him. Mario Little, it is your time to shine.

kupark 10 years, 6 months ago

Also, I have to say I liked Bill Self's comment. He is not begging them nor he is critical of KC Star (at least on the outside). He is going let Henrys decide this, which I think is appropriate. We are well past recruiting them.

collegebb 10 years, 6 months ago

nicely done waywardJay...i agree completely

If this whole situation was switched around I doubt X and CJ would have any thoughts about switching to KU. They want to go to Kentucky. Self said the right thing. Right now they gave their word to KU, if they change so be it. KU got PLENTY to look forward to this next year. I think we've all learned a lot for the recruitment classes for years to come.

Luan Do 10 years, 6 months ago

IF THIS ARTICLE IS TRUE THEN WE DO NOT WANT A CRYBABY, SISSY KID PLAYING FOR KU IF HE DOESN'T WANT TO BE HERE!!!!

WE DO NOT WANT XAVIER HENRY I HOPE YOU READ THIS!!!!!!!

The Henrys are doing this to themselves. Fans were excited, now we're not.

Not everyone can love you, especially not journalists, we're too cynical.

But now you're making us dislike you, just like Padgett... except he accomplished that by sucking.

kw11b2p 10 years, 6 months ago

You're right on kjhkcapn. You know who else sucks.......Calipari

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

We shouldn't be outright destroying these kids, let's be honest.... they are hardly talking here..... their dad is... and because of their dad..... they will be faced with just about every negative media they can......

te star did write abit of a sarcastic take on that piece...and one that shows a fatehr more concerned with selling his sons in the NBA than getting his kids better....

However.... there is nothign that has ever spoken to me ON THE COURT that says these kids will be anything but solid players..... look at the KC star pictures... these kids look in decent to good shape.....

I have NO problem thinking these kids will fit in with our team... Our GUys will welcome them if they want to be welcomed...... but i think there will always be a fan backlash at ku at UK at ANYWHERE.....

it kinda pisses me off they waited until Stephenson signed but oh well... if they leave.... we will require wonderful play from otehr incredibly talented players....

Either way i think we will be fine from this..... i just hope they will be.... this could be the begining of a long decent from them..... Wasn't Brandon Jennings supposed to be better than 10th overall ????

poor jumpshot, poor decisionmaking proved he shoulda gone to college.... bucks picked him 10th instead of someone taking him 3-6 range.....

CJ absolutely needs to sell what he can do on a court..... no matter where he plays....

X has the footage.... but it remains to be seen what he can do against people as big as him ( the OKC high school league he was playign against didn't have a stephenson who could guard him ) and the NBA is FULL of kids as big as he is....

kupark 10 years, 6 months ago

If X doesn't come I would have to say that this would go down as one of the worst recruiting jobs by Bill Self. I mean think about it: Wall, Cheeks, Snaer, Lance, X, Cousins, Favors, Orton and we couldn't land even one of them.

I know Bill Self is a great coach and a recruiter but for some reason he failed this year (if X doesn't come). Whatever happened to 'championship bounce'? The college world has changed.

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

Ku.... You cannot get high shcool kids to make great decisions every year.... especially in a year of ..... Scum Upheaval.....

Calipari's move has shifted the toilet bowl.....

If these kids go onto Kentucky...... I think COllege basketball just created a new blood fued...... i would fully expect Kansas Kentucky games for the forseeable future to be BLOODFUEDS......

think about it... even factoring the kids out of this...

the firing of gillespie.... the '08 championship.... the fact these are both former Kansas assitants.... the obi-wan v. anakin angle..... this is going to be NASTY.... when this finally meets on the court where it SHOULD be finalized.....

Brett Glover 10 years, 6 months ago

Ok thats over the line right there park, Sure he didn't get the bigshots but all they are are names, I think what he got us is better than landing anyone of those guys who obviously don't care about anything but "perfecting their game". He got Robinson, Johnson and Withey and i think they have more charecter than most of those muscleheads.

Self did a fine job,

brewdog 10 years, 6 months ago

We should not sell our souls for these guys. The Henrys' are like Lester Earl squared.

wolfy 10 years, 6 months ago

If Kentucky wants to be welcomed back into the ranks of the college basketball elite, they need to start acting accordingly. Coach Cal should reject these bush league recruiting tactics. If the roles were reversed, I'm confident Bill Self would not attempt to poach the Henrys from UK. Cal, you are still acting like a Conference USA bottom feeder.

KU1992 10 years, 6 months ago

I wonder if they realize that the KC star does not represent lawrence in any way. Most of KC is in Misery anyway. I don't think there has been a negative article about the Henry bro's from ljw once.

Tip to Carl: Stop talking to the press! it hasn't helped you once. you had your time in the spotlight now let your sons have theirs. They might be able to clean this up with some honesty.

Over 200 posts and not A SINGLE WORD FROM JAYBATE!!!!!!!!

My guess is he is waiting to see what HCBS says after the family meeting. Maybe that might be a good strategy for all of us.

In my mind now which will be the more difficult, losing these talented young men....or keeping them???

I am truly not sure!!!

jdhawk97 10 years, 6 months ago

truefan - I agree. Everyone who has not should listen to the podcast from the radio interview. Carl Henry sounds as exhausted with the process (and his sons) as anyone. He said nothing negative towards KU fans. He only mentioned that X's mother was now worried about how they might be received in Lawrence, and based on the majority of these posts, who can blame her? How does she know that the vocal minority do not speak for most KU fans? They haven't lived here for quite some time. The Henrys are likely headed to UK, but if that's what they think is best for them, then so be it. Yes, it's frustrating for KU fans for this to happen after all of the drama of the last few months, but either way it plays out, it's not our decision. And if they decide to join the Jayhawks on the court, they will undoubtedly garner some of the loudest cheers.

Kye Clark 10 years, 6 months ago

BEAT IT!!! Carl, take your traveling freak show and hit the bricks. You and the greasy snake oil salesman Calipari deserve each other. Kansas is way to classy for the Henry family. If HCBS wasn't a class act himself, he would send coach Cal a videotape or email something everyday reminding him of how KU punked him when it mattered. He can sign all the one and dones he wants to and slip them in with bogus SAT scores, but until you have some jewelery, some hardware, until you can introduce yourself as a national championship winning coach, then you are still running nothing but a puppy mill, a minor league for the NBA, and are a joke to your profession and your collegues in it.

Kye Clark 10 years, 6 months ago

KUPark - what a ludicrous statement. Why don't you wait and see how Johnson & Robinson perform and then make that assessment. KU had a recruiting class once that wasn't chalk full of 5 star all-americans. Maybe you remember Russell Robinson, Sasha Kaun, & Darnell Jackson? Another thing to consider is that with Brandon Rush being the exception, KU doesn't get the OADs like a lot of other schools. They don't drool over kids with one foot out the door before ever setting foot on campus. At any rate Park, please reserve judgement until we've actually played some games

kw11b2p 10 years, 6 months ago

Look, I like every one of the probably ten thousand people who have posted on this site have very strong feelings about this news. That being said, we all have to face the fact that whatever the decision by the very talented Henry brothers, it has without a doubt already been made. For those of us who are die hard Ku fans, trust in this. Bill Self and the University of Kansas basketball team are phenomonal. We will weather this storm and we will emerge stronger in the end having done so. This is a winning program........a program that does not rely on the recruitment of one or two individuals. This season, with or without the Henry brothers will be, without question, an extremely successful one. We currently have the tools to get the job done........and we will fill any gap with superbly talented athletes.....It is my understanding that Lance could still be an option. At the end of the day we must all remember what the most important thing we learned during this fiasco was..............CALIPARI SUCKS

Martin Rosenblum 10 years, 6 months ago

Let's fast forward to Bill's "boot camp".

Just for s & g's, let's say that the Henry boys have shown up on campus.

Bill is going through the usual motions of conditioning (see who is the first to puke).

Zavier doesn't feel like doing his 500th wind sprint.

Does he A) call his dad B) call his mom C) hold his breath until he turns blue D) drop to the floor and have a 4 year old tantrum E) walk off the court and call Coach Cal? F) all of the above

Or, does he suck it up and become a Jayhawk ?

MinnesotaJay 10 years, 6 months ago

Well, if they don't come, then they will have gone back on their word. They will have failed to honor their commitment, and their word will have been revealed to be worth little..

If they do come, they will have honored their commitment, and hopefully, they will embrace their time at KU. If they do, there should be no problem with team chemistry. And, KU will embrace them. I trust that HCBS and the rest of the staff will handle the situation as skillfully as they have in the past.

I hope they come, but as Coach says, it's beyond our control. I'm not going to worry about it.

robert rasdon 10 years, 6 months ago

this is really getting stupid do the henrys really think they are above KU ? Does anyone remeber a guy named lester Earl no.1 pick coming out of high school transfers to Kansas from LSU and sucked from day one . these one and done players need to understand that you can be a great player coming out of high school but until you are coached by a stellar coach like Bill Self you cant become a Brandon Rush or a Mario Chalmers . So I say Cal you want them take them! and then you can play your NBA ball without plays or the ability to hit a freethrow and your stock is falling in the draft because there is to many one and done players on your team the rest of us up here in the land of Basketball tradition will be celebrating another national title. carl is a better pg than Sherron . your f* crazy.

100 10 years, 6 months ago

These guys are men -- Self will get this sorted out. It's amazing what two groups of fans (Kentucky & Missouri), through Internet services (KC Star & UK fans pretending to be X) can do.

Thank goodness Self is going down there -- X & CJ are great players & it will be great to see them for the first time at Late Night in the Phog.

Rock Chalk, Carl, Barbara, X & CJ!

SoCalAlum 10 years, 6 months ago

for KUPark - FWIW - your assessment of this year's recruiting effort reflects your frank lack of knowledge on the matter...KU had Orton until Thomas Robinson committed; once TR committed, KU withdrew offer but then bounced him to Coach Self's BFF Billy Gillespie. Likely, the same thing happened with Snaer (or perhaps, he was concerned about PT with Sherron in front of him). AND, btw, we have yet to read that Wall has qualified academically.

jaybate 10 years, 6 months ago

First, X and CJ should do exactly what they want. Better they go where they want than come and let their frustrated hopes spoil the chemistry of a very good team in its own right.

Second, I think they are foolish to turn down KU for UK, if that proves what they want.

Third, it makes some sense that they would rather play with a bunch of new guys than an established good team for two reasons: a) it is easier to be an equal among a bunch of new guys just like themselves; and b) it will be much easier to get minutes at UK. Sooner or later these issues had to weigh in.

Fourth, it has seemed possible all along that Calipari was perhaps who they were most loyal to, and they perhaps just parked at KU for the interim, while Calipari cleared himself, and just in case Calipari did not survive the investigations, or that the investigations blew back on the Henrys.

Fifth, the key question is probably whither Mother Henry? Is she still working in Lawrence, or not? She appeared to put her foot down once before, when Carl appeared to screw things up. Will she step in again? Her deafening silence of late suggests not. Her silence suggests she is on board with the next whistle stop of UK.

Sixth, Self probably knew this was never a done deal. The LJW reported a quote it attributed to Xavier back when Xavier committed to KU. Xavier said reportedly that Self asked Xavier, if he were sure about committing to KU? Coaches that ask those kinds of questions at a closing appear to suspect there are unresolved issues.

Seventh, Self perhaps knew he had a problem with CJ, as far back as when the LJW reported Self saying that CJ could challenge for serious minutes this season. Coaches usually don't say things like that about a recruit in public with an already excellent team full of returning veterans, after the recruit has signed, unless they are worried the recruit is concerned about lack of expected playing time.

Eighth, for those that have defended the honor of the Henry family, and X and CJ, by arguing that they bore no responsibility for the recruiting circus that evolved when Calipari left them high and dry in Memphis, it is now virtually impossible for them to say they bore no responsibility for this latest tempest over a possible switch to UK. Blaming a newspaper story, or a blog, for this possible switch is laughable.

Tuskin 10 years, 6 months ago

Xavier and CJ, you can definitely come to KU with no ill-will toward you from the fans. Here's how: come practice with the team, give a very brief press conference to say that your dad said some things that he probably shouldn't have, and you're not going to get into which of those things might or might not have been true.

The Star article and the media firestorm it caused? They had nothing to do with anything either of you said - just various quotes from your dad. Point that out, and the Kansas fans will rally to you.

But practicing with the team next week would sure go a long way to ending rumors and reassuring your nervous fan base.

On the other hand, if you decide that Kentucky is the place for you, good luck there.

But wherever you go, don't visit basketball blogs and chat rooms. When you play a game, 13,000 people cheer if you hit a shot, and they say, "ohh," if you miss. But on the internet, they write their "ohh," and you get to read pages and pages of the 13,000 people expressing their frustration with that miss. Wherever you go, listen to your coach. He'll tell you what you need to know to get better.

Especially if it's Coach Self.

Rock Chalk!

jaybate 10 years, 6 months ago

Ninth, probably the biggest factor in the Henry's de-committing to KU, assuming they do, is them likely realizing there's too much talent here for them to compete with and beat out in order to be 30 minute men and OADs. Carl indicated in his reputed quotes that he's watched the KU players and concluded that CJ was as good as any guard Self has. The key to the quote was "as good as." Why? Because to beat out veterans, one has to be better than the vets; that implies CJ, even in the eyes of his own optimistic father, was probably not going to get to be one of the 30 minute men. It is only a hunch, but Cal probably recognized the problem all along and, once cleared and once Meeks had jumped, probably got out the word that CJ and Wall would be his guards. X his three. Self could not make that promise, because he knew there was a reasonable chance that Tyshawn had gone supernova over the summer. Even X being a 30 minute man was tenuous with Brady and Little coming back hungry, and Marcus Morris reputedly emerging from his pupal state into a full fledged D1 beast--a beast perhaps even capable of playing the three, too, now that Withey and Robinson are here to staff the four.

Bottom line: the Henry brothers probably figured the talent was too deep and experienced for the Henry brothers both to be 30 minute men in Lawrence and as soon as Calipari got cleared in the investigations (or at least seemed to cleared of the stuff that might wreck this coming season, since Cal's programs, like Tark the Shark's programs, appear always to be in some stage of investigation about something), their jump to UK became a fait accompli.

And should they jump, it will probably be reasonable to infer that they did not do the sensible thing and come to Lawrence to work out this summer, because they believed it was likely that Calipari would be cleared and they would be re-re-committing to UK.

Both the Henry's and Self are apparently using the media story as a straw man to blame in order to deflect the bad PR that is probably going to accrue for both side as this unfolds. Self's reputed trip to OKC tonight appears just window dressing to make it look like he did his best.

After all, what is Coach Self going to say tonight? Is he going to say, "Xavier, are you sure?" I believe he has already asked that one before.

No, this pow-wow seems all about putting the best face on things for everyone involved.

Still, KU appears to have been used.

And blaming a media story, or blogs, probably isn't going to fool enough persons in this instance, to it look otherwise.

Its too bad, if the Henry's do choose not to play for KU. With them, this year's KU team would have been an unusually deep one. Without them, it is merely one that has a very good chance to be national champion. I can live with the latter.

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

SO Jaybate, you are saying they are foolish and switching to Kentucky ???? in significantly more colorful words..... ( im playing Nantz to your packer here )

Kent Kossoy 10 years, 6 months ago

This is a waste of time. KU BBall used to be bigger than this. If they do not want to come to KU, so be it. Let them go to UK. One day they will regret that decision. I am not too sure they belong here anyway. How can parents that had the opportunity to play at KU show such disloyalty. They were given a chance by the school. And this is payback? Sad but reality sucks. There is no loyalty in Jayhwksville. Mighty Carl has struck out.

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

kik im not ruling this out as the BEST thing that COULD happen to Ku...... jaybate's right.....

Tyshawn's playing in elite ocmpany representing our boys and our country.... Marcus hung 20 on NBA big bodies in our alumni scrimmages..... Little and Morningstar will literaly fight for minutes..... and we have robinson and WIthey fighting for time....

Perhaps this was all a ruse to clear calipari for the meantime.... and then a tank job.....

Either way.... once this storm clears.... i expect there may be some legitimacy here.... maybe these Henry boys were looking at being first two of the bench instead of starting.... and realized that's not the way to immediately get to the NBA

kw11b2p 10 years, 6 months ago

JAYBATE

Nice to see your commentary, I agree completely. KU will still be dominant with or without the Henry brothers.

Bret Eckert 10 years, 6 months ago

I read the KC Star article. I also was at KU when dad Carl was there. Could not stop talking then and that continues to be a problem to this day. He had trouble playing at the highest level and wants to live his NBA dream through his sons. Or should I say son. Where is CJ going to start let alone play and be one and done. They are all about themselves. Being a team player is not in their vocab.

I got so pissed while reading the article. Coach Self must have been off the charts. I wanted to drive to OKC and punch Carl in the mouth. I am sure Coach Self took care of that verbly tonite.

We are going to be fine w/o this cancer called The Henry Family. This "One and Done" stuff is not what Coach Self and Kansas is all about.

Let us not forget we are KU!!!!! We will compete for a NCAA Title w/ or w/o them.

Brian Skelly 10 years, 6 months ago

I love all the angst on here. Everyone is frothing at the mouth because of what Xavier / C.J. / Carl / Lance / Wall / Calapari are doing.

WTF? What the is wrong with you folks... WHO CARES !?!?!?

Would it be great to have 2-3 NBA ready folks on the team next year? Yup.

We'll have two for sure. Getting a lottery pick would be great. Along with his brother.

But guess what??? If this is the process were going through NOW with folks is this unreal whats going to happen when their actions truly can affect the school????

I've got no beef with whatever the hell they wanna do. Im just sick of reading and hearing about it.

I think the KC Star article is an "out" which is phony and flimsy but who cares? It certainly seems that "X" wanted to play for Calapari all along.

Those who think Lance Stephenson would have been a better "fit" are kidding themselves. His old man is worse than Carl Henry 7 days a week. Its just that we've been inundated with the Henry's because both the folks played here and we recruited C.J. 4 years ago.

X and C.J. are still the best option and if they go they go. Do we probably miss out on a good chance to win the whole thing? Yup. We're still the Big 12's best though. We're still almost assuredly a Sweet 16 team. The will of Collins and Aldrich alone almost assure us of that. Adding those guys certainly pushes us over the top, but at what price?

Im just sick of the e'fn drama. We'll just be damn good team instead of a Final Four lock (which as Pierce, LaFrentz, Pollard, Vaughn, Haase can tell you --- isnt a lock anyway).

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

of course yes....

Calipari would make Bledsoe disappear if it meant getting X at the 2...... Claipari is willing to anything he can to line up as many " Blue Chips" as he can....

not that cousins is shaq...though after loafing it during AAU he may be shaq-lite not that X is penny..... though i suppose there are some comparisons.....

Let's face it... Im pretty sure Nick Nolte could coach these kids to inevitable NCAA violations..... wait a minute... that's how that movie ended...... Creepy..... Since Cal's 2 for 3 so far in his coaching career getting Sanctions against his team.... I'm sure he can go 3 for 4

So much hype here. I just have a few points.

  1. I think the Henry family has a right to be worried about how their kids will be treated after some of the things I've read on this site and others from fans. I won't play the hypocrite, at times in this drama I've been really pissed at them, too. I just keep trying to remember they're only 18-years olds. I try... I really do...

  2. I think Kansas fans have every right to be pissed off as well. We have no tradition dealing with headcases (which is more and more what some of the Henry clan are looking like) and tolerating it. We don't deal with controlling parents here. Look at Micah Downs -- he was an all-American with a crazy dad. Look at Padget. His dad was nuts/over-controlling, too. This school has never had fans who'd bend over backwards for one single player, because this school has NEVER been about just one player. The University of Kansas is about team basketball, as ridiculous as that might sound to potential OAD players.

So, as much as I REALLY WANT the Henry brothers to come here. If they leave, I understand why. In some ways, I wish KU fans weren't so judgemental sometimes of OAD and other players, but on the other hand, I'm very proud that KU has never had a OAD.

In closing, if Papa Henry still thinks C.J. is a OAD, I want to know what he's high on. Also, I do think that any player who is scared of a KU beat writer (who usually stays unbiased and is a solid reporter) and a bunch of fan comments needs to either see a psychiatrist or get out of the basketball game.

truefan, This is NOT bad. We don't need either of them. I liked our team without them. The only thing that is bad is what happened with Stephenson. I thought it would have been a mutually beneficial relationship.

I just don't understand all the panic. Has X or CJ ever said they are not committed to KU?

Why is everyone making mountains out of rumored molehills?

As coach Self said before. They have stated that they are committed to KU and until I hear different from them, that is the plan.

If everyone says that we cannot get Lance because he signed a financial agreement with Cincinnatti, please remember that X did the same with KU. On top of that, he is enrolled at KU and without a release, he would not be able to play anywhere next year.

If they go to UK so be it. I'm tired of the show they keep putting on. Carl needs to learn to keep his mouth shut and then articles such as the one in the star won't come out. These guys are all about themselves and that is not KU ball. I'm sick of this entire family. Go the hell to UK... PLEASSSSSSSSSSSE!

KU2010CHAMPS 10 years, 6 months ago

KennyPowers 10 years, 6 months ago

The Shiver.com is reporting that the Henry brothers are still on there way to Kansas. Please let this be the end of it!

rockchalkmillhouse25 10 years, 6 months ago

I hope this all turns out to be true. I hope Coach Self told them to get to campus and get to class asap!

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

Welcome back, if this is true....

there is just one little thing we need to clear up X.

Seriously, tell you dad to CHILL....

Step 1. You need to get up there and ball with your teammates, Seriously Dude. whether CJ can come or not..... You need to get this hashed away with them ASAP.... Sherron might have a bone to pick with you and CJ since your papa shot his mouth off...... and there is alot of water your guys gotta get out of this boat.

Step 2. DO NOT INVITE THE MEDIA NEAR YOU.

Step 3. Focus on the team orientation, you do this... the will make you a star WITH THEM.....

Step 4. Make a card of yourself, ham it up at Late Nite.... Our fans love a card.... Need any proof..... Scot Pollard.

Step 5. and this is a big one..... DELIVER THE GOODS. Talk is fine, but you cannot screw up the chances you have been given. No one talks about Ray Lewis as someone who just talks big game, but people talk about TO in negative light..... be Ray Lewis Not TO.

collegebb 10 years, 6 months ago

kw11b2p 10 years, 6 months ago

First. let me say that I respect the decision, I take back SOME of the comments about committment, and I have been proved an idiot. That being said, let me say this...........Henry brothers, regardless of what has been wriiten, what has been said, you will understand what it means to be a member of the JAYHAWK NATION when you here your names called in introduction on Late Night. It will be an undeniable answer to any questions as to this community's support of your impending tenure here at KU, and an experience unlike anything you've probably experienced thus far (sports related of course). Assuming that you show the same level of committment to the University and program that it will show you. you will never have to worry about being supported or respected in this community.......we simply ask for a committment from our athletes and hope for a corresponding level of integrity and focus to task once on campus. This being said, if what I have read is true, welcome to KU and just keep your pants on for Late Night............It will be life altering..

Rock Chalk Jayhawk Go KU

Oh, and by the way, Calipari still sucks

rawkhawk 10 years, 6 months ago

I feel like I'm a true fan KU although I question some posters on this site. Welcome Henry brothers (I'm feeling deja vu)...please come up to Lawrence and put an end to these rumors and I guarantee Jayhawk nation will support you. Yes, KU is a place that has tradition, and a great current team that chemistry will need to mesh, and yes, has a great chance at being national champs. The real KU nation are at Allen Fieldhouse and beyond (sometimes on-line but always have some skepticism). I look forward to cheering you in Boulder for the annual CU-KU game. KU fans are everywhere and will support you and the team through thick and thin

Finally X, ( i, officially will call you X until earn the Full name treatment.... Throw down 30 on over 50 percent shooting IN Missouri this year and I'll call you Xavier... )

All of this TALK, and all the talk to come..... Do what KG does with it.... USE IT AGAINST YOUR ENEMIES.....IE.... When we give you hell.... drop 20 on Saint Louis Tech....

There are ways of dealing with Negativity ..... i remember there was once a basketball player who was in your same position, and there was a school that shall remain nameles.... who came into the Phog for a non-conference match up.... and just seconds into the game...... One of Kent... I mean..... The school who shall remain Nameless's best players Rand... Mor... wait anonymity..... through up a lazy hook shot and Our player in your position SWATTED That shot away like it was nothing..... he went on to two successful seasons..... a break ACL injury but eventually rounded out a champion is playing for indiana now... in the NBA.... Where you and your father want you to play ( not necessarily indiana.... but you get the gist )

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

by the way.... that big loud thud you heard was the trifecta of felis catus who are most effect by this situation falling to the floor in misery...... and Manhattan ..... and Bourbon country

kw11b2p 10 years, 6 months ago

HERE'S WHAT'S IMPORTANT..........in this entire fiasco, there was nothing to show that Calipari does not still suck!!!!!!!!!!!!

waywardJay 10 years, 6 months ago

Kw.... Bravo ! you must feel very good about this whole situation

kansasbasketball 10 years, 6 months ago

what day is late night? and do you buy tickets to it or what??

Dan Pawlowski 10 years, 6 months ago

Don't be Ray Lewis either. He was involved in an incident that resulted in the murder of someone. He got off somehow but someone is still dead , no one was convicted. Don't be like Ray.

kuclay 10 years, 6 months ago

This whole thing is starting to stink of the david padgett and micah downs situations-an over controlling father with a possible one and done son who realizes that his son will not be the first or even second option on his college team, and then looks for the quickest exit. What makes this even worse is the this time around the father is supposed to be a jayhawk.

Blake Post 10 years, 6 months ago

oh yeah, lot of tails getting pulled here. Ignore the junk. Carl Henry was a great KU player. His sons will be too, and I don't think we have to worry about them like Downs, Giddens, Giles. And let's remember, real villains are like NU Lawrence Phillips...doing time. Hawks have a chance every time they step on the court this year... a good chance focus on that.

speedy 10 years, 6 months ago

Enough is enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 let me make one comment and then we will decide who wins. UK, MO. and Kst are responsible for most of these neg. comments and their made up replys. so stop the disinformation. don,t post! i,m going to give you an example of what can and has happened before. bill mayer, and Max might verify this story as they were around for some of this story. back in the 1950,s some thing was said that that upset one of KU,s great players. did you ever wonder why the # 13 was never in the allen field house rafters? well i still do not know what was said or done but actions and words were the results. i alwaysheard that #13 was asked about helping on recruiting certain players on the west coast. he refused. he never visited,or mentioned KU at anytime. WHY? what it that turned him off? was it the firing of phog allen ? was it the losing to NC in the championship game? i still do not know. but i do know how the #13 jersey came to be on display. ask anyone at the BB program and i,m sue they will give you an answer. it might be partly true. in 1996 my son and i spent 17 days in Atlanta at the olympics. I was late getting to a venue but still on time to get in line early enough to claim my seat. So what has this to do with #13? he was not a dream team member. he was better. my son had been talking to a black man while waiting for me. it turned out that man was the agent for #13.when my son told him of my assoc. with KU and who really is/was the greatest BB player of all time the subject of the absent jersey was confronted. the result was not too many mo. later when #13 was hoisted into its prom. poition. so why the delay? someone or somthing had been said years before that caused a total breakdown of contact. it has been corrected. this is exactly what is happening surrounding the henry,s. IT MUST STOP!!!!!!!! now we will see if UK and the others even heard of #13. any more neg. comments will viewed as being from outside of the KU alums. don,t post neg comments.
