Now that Oklahoma State basketball coach Sean Sutton has 'resigned,' the onus is on the school to name a successor immediately, or at the very least say loudly that Bill Self is not a candidate. Otherwise, it's unfair to Kansas University, the Big 12, and college basketball in general to leave it hanging while a Final Four coach who played at the school is preparing his team for Saturday's game against North Carolina.
Self is not a candidate because he's not interested in the job. That doesn't mean Self wouldn't advice his alma mater, if asked.
Which brings us to Billy Gillispie, who still hasn't signed his contract with Kentucky. Gillispie, a close friend of Self's, loves the Big 12. he'd be a great get for OSU. Crazier things have happened in sports.

I hope you are right, Tom. Billy would probably be a lot more appreciated at OSU than he is at UK too.

Michael Kim of ESON is such a nimrod. He's a MIZZOU grad who of course, is always upset that KU has so much more success than him Alma Mater. If anybody is watching ESPN news and how Mr. Kim is spinning this story, I think you would agree that he is WAY off base.Obviously, waking up Monday morning was tough for all Mizzou and KSU fans to yet again see their arch rival marching to another Final Four.

I don't know, man. With the kind of scratch Pickens has been rumored to be offering, that's a lot of money to pass on, only to watch the offer go to your good friend. I know it's not always about the money...but it is.

Coach Self needs to come out and respectfully yet unequivocally express his lack of interest in the OSU job. It's the only way to silence the 24/7 media talking heads. Every day that he remains silent or equivocates creates more of a distraction for the team. If Coach Self truly really wishes to stay and values making a serious run at the title, he'll act quickly. In the meantime, we as KU fans would do well to express our appreciation and support for him and forget this "Roy Williams betrayed us" foolishness. Let's focus on what a great coach we have and how well he represents the program and university. Let's endeavor to make the head coach job at KU the most attractive and supportive job in college basketball, as it should be.

Jock sniffer Pickens will have to get a big name but would Gillespie give up Kentucky for lowly OSU? If so, get the money up front and don't leave it in his hedge fund like OSU has. Pickens could go the way of Bear Stearns.

"Coach Self needs to come out and respectfully yet unequivocally express his lack of interest in the OSU job. It's the only way to silence the 24/7 media talking heads. Every day that he remains silent or equivocates creates more of a distraction for the team."How exactly has he remained silent or equivocated??? He has said strongly from the very beginning that he wasn't interested in the OSU job, and said it even MORE strongly today.

I agree, actorman. I was simply pointing out that the talking heads on ESPN and elsewhere wouldn't take his past statements as the last word. He needs/needed to come out now and again unequivocally express a lack of interest for the job. He's done that, and I hope and trust that all will move on.
DocBean 5 years, 1 month ago
Of course he'll listen. So would you in his situation.but there are intangibles that should keep him at KU.Self NEVER said he wasn't a canidate for the job, he said they have not contacted him, and he doesn't imagine they will while he's in his current situation - i.e. coaching in the final 4.HE WILL BE CONTACTED. Let's just hope when he meets up with Lew next week Lew and Bill both walk away smiling and wearing Crimson and Blue.
Gootsie 5 years, 1 month ago
What's up with the timing of this? Why couldn't they have waited until next week?
northleavitt 5 years, 1 month ago
Assuming Self is not a candidate and will not be a candidate, why would he advise OSU during it's search for a new coach, Tom? It's not like we play in the same conference and recruit some of the same players. It's a classic conflict of interest. I highly doubt that Lew would green light this.

I agree completely Actorman and would only add that there is NO WAY to silence the 24/7 media talking heads UNTIL OSU hires a replacement. Remember Les Miles of LSU when the Michigan job opened up? He said he wasn't interested in Michigan. He signed a contract extension. He repeated every day that he was not interested in Michigan. He was not a candidate. That no offer was made and if one was he would refuse. He did everything but take a dump on the Michigan flag. Still, the talking heads talked. And speculated. And said there was a chance. Until OSU hires a replacement, we get to deal with the same stuff. Why? Because controversies are what make the money. And the possibility of Bill Self's last game with KU to be against Roy Williams is too enticing to not talk about it.
carterpatterson 5 years, 1 month ago
Billy Gillespie will seriously look at the OSU job. He has NO CONTRACT in place at UK.
plasticJHawk 5 years, 1 month ago
peter - you are the first person to mention the possibility of Bill Self coaching his last game for KU against Roy Williams. You even beat the media on that one... congratulations

Oh, and Northleavitt,I think that Lou would have no problem with Self advising OSU on Coach Hunt 2008: The Search for Continued Mediocrity. One, He will be too excited that HCBS is staying to care much. Two, he realizes that a strong Big 12 is good for KU in the long run.
dsinger 5 years, 1 month ago
That doesn't mean Self wouldn't "advice" his alma mater, if asked.Aren't you an editor, Tom?
hawk_bred20 5 years, 1 month ago
Why would Gillespie go from A&M to Kentucky, then to OSU? I want to hear some logic to that. Self has many more reasons to go to OSU than Gillespie and I don't think Self will even go.

For those wondering about the timing of the OSU decision. Here in the Sooner state things are done purely out of personal interest, with no regard for decency or respect.

Wonder what Mark Turgeon thinks about all this right now? lol.....

@ dsinger - What? I advice people all the time. Don't you?
actorman 5 years, 1 month ago
DocBean, congratulations for making yourself look like an idiot on TWO separate threads. You already made your boneheaded comment once; did you really need to make it again??? For your information, Self DID say he is not a candidate, and even went further and said, "I'll be back. I'm not going anywhere." (See the comments under "Breaking News.")
lance1jhawk 5 years, 1 month ago
actorman- Thankyou, Not sure if DocBean is typing with full mental capabilities. If he is, then he's just a jackass.HCBS is not going anywhere, the timing of all this couldn't be any worse though. Our guys have been through alot, and will pull through this too. I'm sure HCBS as already addressed the team and told them the same thing. He's the Coach of Kansas University and will be for a long long time.

Let's get real folks. Bill $elf hasn't done much for KU. I feel sorry for the guy. It was sort of sad to watch him at the end against Davidson. I say ship him back to OSU. How about bringing back the glory days of Larry Brown...if he can stay away from the co-eds.
patton6 5 years, 1 month ago
You're right, 4 conference championships (3 tourney), 2 elite 8's and a final four in 5 years is pitiful. I say get rid of him as quickly as possible so we can get a real coach in here.

CherryCreekHawk, stay home and tase yourself while we're having the parade next week. In other countries you'd have your fingers cut off for wasting them on typing that trash.

hawkbred20:This is the story that I've been told by somebody in the sports business. Billy Gillespie never got a contract complete at UK. Apparently, UK wants clauses in the contract that set morality rules that he's not crazy about. Not that he's not a good guy, but UK is not his mother. Anyway, he apparently has NO written contract, only a letter of understanding. While his first season ended on a good note, he apparently has issues with the Athletic department. Granted...OSU is not a UK.

Fellow Hawks, Keegan, et al.Please be advised that one does not "advice someone".He advises them.Consider breaking your dependence upon spellcheckers. They don't work well enough. How do you like that advice?Virginia Hawk
