KU wins despite ailments

Hit hard by the intestinal-flu bug, Brandon Rush tossed and turned all Tuesday night.

"I was waking up every hour on the dot throwing up - 4:24, 5:24. It was really like that the whole night," Rush said after mustering enough energy to play 33 minutes in Kansas University's lethargic 63-43 victory over Detroit Mercy on Thursday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

"I threw up yesterday the whole day," Rush said of a woozy Wednesday, which included a trip to the Watkins Memorial Health Center where he received an IV and some medicine.

"I had a little trash can by the bed. I'd empty it every time I'd throw up, not like their coach. I wasn't just sitting there throwing up in front of 16,300 people," Rush added after his nine-point, five rebound outing.

Rush was referring to Detroit assistant coach Garland Mance, who doubled over on the visitors bench and threw up with his Titans down 26-18 early in the second half.

Play was stopped as Mance was attended to and finally led to the locker room.

"I've never seen anybody too lazy to get up and go to the trash can. It just caught him off guard, I guess," Rush cracked.

It turns out a third participant was affected by the bug - KU freshman Darrell Arthur, who had six points in 21 minutes (he missed all three free-throw tries on a night KU hit just 11 of 20).

Arthur told Rush he felt light-headed all day.

"He's a little sick, too. I think his mind wasn't into it at all. You could tell in the first half," Rush said. "I don't think anybody's mind was into it except Mario. He played the whole game."

KU's only offensive threat was Mario Chalmers, who scored 22 points off 7-of-12 shooting. The only Jayhawk to score in double figures, he hit four of eight threes and four of five free throws.

"Mario was terrific," KU coach Bill Self said. "I thought Brandon showed a lot of courage the second half. He was sick as a dog. Brandon really took Cotton (Brandon, 20 points, 8-of-20 shooting) out of it the last seven or eight minutes of the game."

Self put Rush on Cotton with 8:55 left and KU up, 41-37. The (11-2) Jayhawks outscored (3-9) Detroit, 22-6, the rest of the way.

"Cotton scored at will every time he touched the ball. He made me work a lot," Rush said. "He came around so many screens. He is so quick with that left hand. I've not seen anybody as quick with the opposite hand."

He's quicker than Rush, who didn't blame the flu - just a puzzling lack of motivation - for his off night.

"I don't think my head was into it at all. I don't know why," he said. "Everybody was outside their own mind, not into the game. We had a great shootaround. Everything was going our way. But when we came to the game, nobody was into it except Mario."

The Jayhawks were miserable offensively the first half in scoring seven points the final 11:17, including a stretch of not scoring on 13 straight possessions, missing eight straight shots and five straight free throws.

KU finally woke up after Jon Goode stuck a three with 8:55 remaining to cut the gap to four points.

Julian Wright, who needed five stitches at halftime to close a cut on his chin, scored his first bucket of the game at 8:41 and followed that with another hoop off a pass from Rush, giving KU a 45-37 lead at 8:01.

Sasha Kaun (six points in 23 minutes) hit two free throws at 7:03 and Russell Robinson a three at 6:11, capping a 9-0 surge that gave KU a 50-37 advantage.

KU led 52-43 following a vicious Chalmers slam at 3:03, then put the game away with an 11-0 run led by five points from Chalmers and four from Rush.

The Jayhawks weren't giddy after the victory, but accepted it as a 'W' on an off night.

"Anytime you win, you have to be somewhat happy," said point guard Robinson. "It was sloppy. You will have those. We got one out of the way."

Self was dejected after a game in which KU's offense disappeared the first half after opening leads of 16-3 and 19-5.

"I have learned over the course of time you shouldn't apologize for winning by 20, but we didn't play well," he said. "From a coach's perspective, there were a lot of good things that happened, even if it wasn't artistic."

For instance, KU held Detroit to 43 points off 30 percent shooting. The Titans hit just five of 21 threes.

"Fifty percent of our game was good today," Self said. "We guarded well. We did a great job on their big kid (Ryvon Covile, seven points, 3-of-8 shooting with 10 rebounds). Sasha did a terrific job on him."

The Jayhawks have one day to work on things before playing again. Rhode Island (7-6) will travel to Allen Fieldhouse Saturday for another 7 p.m. tipoff.

Jimjones... I can understand pessimism after that ugly game, and so many of our ugly games.... but "fire the coach" is always the least constructive way of looking at it. I'm not going to say that I agree with every way that Self goes about coaching. But you have to consider the possibility that any other coach could be having struggles with this team right now. I'm sure another coach would have this offense running more smoothly, but where would we be defensively?

Can you say last year was a failure because of one game? And honestly, you can only put any negative judgement on Coach Self last year on that one game. Because I don't think there are many coaches in the nation that could taken the Big 12 Title with a team so young that started so badly. If you're not going to give Self credit for their successes, then how can you blame him for their failures?

Okay, this is my last constructive response to a "fire bill self" comment!

Maybe, every coach who has a good team but has lost a game or two over the season, should be fired. Those calling for Bill Self's firing are out of touch with reality with not much basketball savvy. They probably are not Jayhawk fans since Jayhawk fans all have enough savvy to know better. Jayhawk fans are extremely happy with their coach.

I don't recall the coach bricking free throws almost the whole game. And they still won by 20. Yeah, it was only because they came alive at the end of the game, but a win is still a win. Considering how sick a number of the key players were, you've got to give the team and its coach credit for hanging in there and ultimately taking care of business. But this team still needs a foul shot consultant or something that willl help them to be more consistent at the charity stripe. The alternative is poor seeding from losing close games in league play and an early exit in March. I will write this off as an ugly win from an offensive perspective and hang on to my faith that this is a special team that will ultimately triumph. I'll just put up with periodic poor play, just as I ignore those who display their lack of faith and imagination by turning the word "fire" into a 4 letter word that substitutes for any meaningful thought. Go Self! Go 'Hawks!!

You know, I'm really, really sick, of this. Seems to me, if it had been a Top 50 team, they would have been "into it." But, somehow it's beneath these players to get excited about a lowly team. Which is why teams like ORU beat them.

Hopefully, once the Big 12 season starts, they'll get more into it, but that shouldn't have anything to do with it.

this game was boring. This is the most boring year of KU basketball I can recall in 20+ years.

There is no passion from this coach, NONE. He might get in their face in the huddle but "golly" he's too laid back. We've all complained how he won't bench the starters for poor play. "By golly those boys had courage tonight". Come on. Rip off your jacket and throw it on the floor from time to time. Show the fans your care for crying out loud. Gee Whiz it might motivate your players too. Quit defending poor play every game. It's always some excuse. Bench the laggards and bring in kids with passion.

This game means very little in the big picture. There is still a lot of time left on Christmas break which means a lot of days of unlimited practices. KU is just fine, and their coach is too. Break it down all you want to; it won't do you a lot of good. Let them be.

I don't know that I agree with your tone but I think you make a good point. I would like to see Self rip off that sport coat a time or two myself. I do like fire from a Coach. I want to see anger in his eyes. A little Bob Knight on occasion, please.

I do think Bill Self is a much better than average Coach and I believe he's a good fit for KU, but I agree that I wish he'd go on a tirade and make everyone think he needs anger management. I do think that would translate to the players mentality.

mcoan, if you dont like it, piss off and root for somebody else for a couple of years, then come back or move on to another team. Nobody wants to sit here and listen to you bitch and whine about how you have no fun watching ku basketball. The only reason it was so much fun in the last 20 years is because Roy Williams had an offense that could run most teams to death, and put up 100 a night, especially on some crappy ass teams! I love it when our defense allows less that 35 % shooting for the game. Like i said before, if you dont like it, watch UNC!!!!!

mcoan did have a very good point, and I think you might have missed it.... his point (I don't think) wasn't that he doesn't like our style of play. It was about them "getting up" for some games and not others. There's some people on here that I believe are sensible people, but just overreact. I didn't think any "bitching or whining" was done in this case. You're laying into someone who is absolutely right. When a team plays "not into it" as Rush put it, then they are painful to watch. Whoever will stick with it and watch all of a game where players aren't admittedly "into it", means they are great fan. I'll rip on people here as much as the next guy, but that was not the appropriate person. Go tell Jaybate all that!

It's not the Big 12 conference teams that should concern anyone. It's not the Florida's or the Boston College's, either. There were all kinds of concerns last year going into the conference season... and then all those seemed to be answered... until some way over-matched mid major team came in and caught KU playing like they are right now. This isn't going to beat anybody in March. We don't need to find ways to win against Detroit.... we need to smoke them. If a player isn't "into" a game, his butt should be sitting on the bench the entire game. I don't care what kind of defense he's playing on their best scorer... it's a good coaching tactic to paint the picture that if you don't have your head in the game, you're not going to play... and who cares if it costs us a game? What's a game right now? Not as important as a taught lesson.

I don't want anyone else coaching KU. But I hope to God that Self learns sooner or later that playing time is the best way to discipline a player. "You can sit here and watch or you can get out there and do what I've taught you, it's up to you"

For one thing, searching for answers on how to get a win against Detroit Mercy is ridiculous. If we aren't pounding UDM by 70 points then we haven't played to our potential. I guess saying so makes me a spoiled fan. Okay, I'll admit it. But I base my opinion on what I've seen of Kansas basketball over the years, and there's a standard set here that your average run-of-the-mill college does not have to live up to. WE DO! This is Kansas!

Right on with the discipline too. Totally agree.

The Self-bashing is a bunch of cr** and we need to find something else to bash on (too bad Quin Snyder isn't around anymore--maybe we can bash Huggins). Now, we look worse on the web than we did against Oral Bob & DePaul on the court.

It's a young team. Let them grow a little and see what they can do.

If all people want to do is be mean about things, this blog should disappear when the the J-W finishes the re-design.

Those of you who are calling for Bill Self's head need to evaluate this: a 75% win percentage, an elite eight appereance, and the respect of the college basketball nation. Another thing to take into account Bill Self is not playing on the court...it is the players. How come you people weren't calling for Bill Self's head after Boston College or Florida?

Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur having the flu bug. Just try playing with that. That is more than you who are whining could do. Back off they have looked decent of late...this is just one game.

Maybe his head wasn't into it due to the fact that he had been puking for the last 2 days. Having managed and supervised hundreds of people in my lifetime I know that the majority of people will call in sick with a scratchy throat to get out of working. I think playing a demanding game for 30 min is to be applauded. Next time you feel sick, get your azz out of bed and go to work, then tell me if your head is into it.

What is w/ this non-conference schedule? This is the worst I remember, and there have been a lot of bad ones lately - but this one BLOWS! Other than Florida, KU hasn't played anybody - which makes for boring games, lethargic play, and rightfully deserved skepticism from the pollsters. BC and USC aren't bad teams, but we need to be scheduling teams we can regularly count on as being elite. I don't understand what we're afraid of - we simply aren't going to get better this way or know where we stand come tournament time.

I'm all for scheduling the giants. I tend to agree that if you schedule cupcakes you pick up some bad habits. Everyone is going to have the mop-up teams on their schedule year-in, year-out...I'm not saying they shouldn't be played. I do wish we would get a little more road-tested playing in some hostile environments and play teams that are stiffer competition. I'd rather have 2 losses come to Florida and USC then losses to DePaul and ORU. You don't really learn a lot from a loss to teams like the latter two, except that you need to play better.

The game was not exciting as we all hoped it would be, but we won and with all the sick players I am happy with the game. Again Mario stepped up and showed the kind of player he should be, a player that can lead us deep in the tourney. go hawks!!!!!!

Face the facts, Self just isn't a good coach at the Div. I level. How many more years will it be before we aren't considered by potential recruits anymore? Not many! Self has not improved KU basketball since he has been here and it isn't because of the caliber of the players; it is the pathetic coaching. We have the worst chancein the tournament than any year Self has coached. Don't bring up Roy, he was almost as bad. At least Roy had Dean Smith to tutor him. Self would be a great juco or Div II coach, but he doesn't have the vision to grow the program or motivate the players. If you want to truly help this team, write KU and tell them to Fire Self before Apr. 3rd. Rock Chalk Jayhawk - Fire Bill Self!!!

I think some of the naysayers have lost their perspective. What would fans of other schools think if they read some of these comments from 'supposed' KU fans right after a 20pt win, and see that same pattern of ranting AFTER every win... We can understand it if we lose, and I am frustrated along with everyone else, but jeez, I read the article, go to the blog, and the first thing I see is "fire Bill". Why now? Did you watch the game and notice how pissed coach looked? And he isnt the one clanking FTs or causing a turnover, now is he????(!)Someone made a point about PT as discipline and I completely agree. The art of coaching is when to do it and when not to--Self yanked Sasha in a hurry at one point in the game, he has "rested" Russell on occasion, and other times has left a player in to try to get it going, like he seems to do with Brandon. Did anyone see how UDM coach yanked Cotton and sat him the final 7-8min--that kid was the main scorer for UDM--maybe an unwise move by that coach? Yes, an ugly, barfy win. But its a win--that cannot be overstated. Here is some perspective: If the SuperBowl winning team had turnovers, dropped passes, gave up sacks, but STILL managed to win--that's it, they are the winner. So please quit crying after wins. Your message loses more and more relevancy with each win, no matter how ugly or pretty. Every sport is about the W. If we lose, YES, we should put it all under the microscope. Take the wins and be happy. What are you going to do if the KU loses in the 2nd round in March? Shoot yourself in the head??? The negativity towards the team and coach after a WIN can only beg the question, what will these bloggers do if we actually lose 3 in a row , or make an early exit in March. You have left yourself no logical recourse at that point (if we lose in March early)other than doing something drastic OR simply gloating against us fellow KU family & your own team by saying something stupid and childish like "I told you so". Practice your debate elsewhere. I also realized that Self apparently is aware of this nonsense, when he said in an article that "his own family has ideas of what he should be doing, just like many of 'our fans' ". Who needs a bunch of armchair QBs, especially after a win? Oh, and before you try to debate THIS game, try learning more about the game, as I am certain any of us who play/played this game at any level, can see the irrationality of much of what is argued. It is a long season. It is basketball which is an unpredictable game. How many times did MJ go 4 for 19 and stink it up? How many times does the #1 seed in March not make it to the FinalFour? The whiners are only showing their own negative, impatient personalities. If other schools fans read our negative blogs after each win, they would think "what clowns! Yeah, go ahead and fire Bill now!" Makes zero sense in the big scheme with a 11-2 squad.

it's amazing how every other coach in america refers to kansas as a good "well coached" team...hmm, maybe the coaches of the teams ku plays know what they're talking about, being that omg, they're coaches themselves, and holy poop, they play other teams too!! its pretty obvious that the members of the "fire bill" squad are probably actual fans of mizzou or kstate or even bitter illini fans...they're just trying to stir the pot...bill's a good coach, pay attention, listen to what is said by the coach himself and the players themselves, and you'll see real quick what kind of coach self is...

This team has so much talent. If it only had a coach who could put it together. Self is clueless and wasting their talent. His lack of results speak for themselves!

agreed. Yea, Bill Self would be a great juco and d-2 coach, thats why hes won everywhere he has been, including Kansas. Im not gonna sit on here and talk about the glory days of Ku basketball, because im only 21 years old. But in those glory days, there were only a few elite teams. Kansas, UNC, Kentuck, Duke, and thats about it, as far as tradition. Do we not realize that teams such as Wichita St., Gonzaga, etc.....are going to continuously get better? Come on now dumbasses, there is too much parity in basketball. None of those teams are as dominant as they were back in the glory days!!!!

Self has all the talent he could ask for - he has McDonald's all Americans! He's just a lousy coach!

Somebody always has an excuse for him though. "They weren't his recruits; wait until he gets his recruits." "They're young." "Wait until next year"

That's hilarious. Look at what Bruce Weber did with Bill Self's Illinois recruits. Look at what Roy did with Matt Doherty's recruits.

Self constantly has player issues, not a lack of talent. The ONLY thing lacking is leadership.

wow, this guys right, i was so wrong, bill is the one missing free throws, missing lay ups, not defending the three, commiting stupid fouls, throwing up 3 after 3, not setting up the offense, having off nights shooting...wow, i didn't realize that it was bill out there playing every position...dang, now thats amazing, i had no idea!!!

...people need to calm down, our team is doing well, we have good players, we have a good coach...to say otherwise is total ignorance....if we were 2-11 i'd say otherwise....self has continued kansas tradition, and that is obvious by conference titles, tournament appearances, overall record, etc.....and btw, i believe that since danny manning, we've been saying wait until next year....it's all part of having one of the best teams in the country year in and out...if we stopped saying wait until next year, then you'd know we're in trouble...honestly, it seems to me that this years team just puts it in cruise control more often than previous teams, maybe because they are focused more on the tourney than anything else? just a thought.... rock chalk jayhawk

Very well said, KUGreenMachine. I have been amazed that some of us have to defend KU ball and our players and coach after win after win, and defend against a supposed fellow fan or two, no less(!). The argument that we moan because we truly love KU ball and just want it to be better is lost on us because of the inappropriate negativity (after a win), and outlandish propositions (fire Bill). The argument that we arent getting the most out of our talent could theoretically apply to any coach in America in any given game. What about FL coach in their loss to KU? Didnt get the most out of his guys, did he? Fire him then. Oh, but lets wait until he gets 3 or 4 wins straight, then say to fire him, yeah, that makes perfect sense...I do not buy the argument against Self based on underachieving talent. This year's team is different from last years undermanned squad. We added two stellar freshmen in Arthur and Collins. I do NOT see any glaring misuse of talent. Yes, Julian is in a funk, but those things just have to be dealt with by hard work and time in the gym. What would MJ say to such an upcoming youngster--I somehow do not think he would say, uh, lets fire the coach that recruited you and is coaching you everyday...

On the lighter side, I think maybe these negative few bloggers really are rabble-rousin' Fizzou or KSU fans or something just trying to get to us after a win--OK, touche, got me...But when our teams meet on the court, we will get you...

The funniest thought I had, was when during the UDM game we were shooting FTs and the crowd was quiet, I could hear ONE voice cawing like a crow or bird--I thought who would heckle our own player?--and I immediately thought of a couple of our bloggers (j--j---s, and j-yb-t-), and laughed out loud "those clowns! HaHaHa!" I also felt somewhat sorry for that poor dissenting (lonely) voice: obviously sucks to be you.

The only thing that sucks is to be a Jayhawk player or fan with Self as the head coach. There's nothing lonely about getting bounced first round every year. To beat Florida on their off-night will be the highlight of this season and that's exactly what's wrong with this program. You can attempt insults all you want, but the facts speak for themselves. Look at Bill's record; he doesn't belong here. He is so over his head. The team has no self-esteem or confidence today.
