Omaha sights and sounds, Day Two

By Staff     Mar 20, 2008

**5:26 p.m.** – Got a lot going on for the newspaper, but I’ll weigh in quickly on the Qwest Center atmosphere. It was very much pro-Kansas against Portland State. The Vikings had a nice half-section of rabid fans, and the PSU band was wild. But for the most part, this was almost a home atmosphere for the Jayhawks (like they needed it).It won’t be so obvious Saturday. UNLV had a great crowd, and for those of you unaware, get used to this chant: _RE-BELS_ :clap, clap: _RE-BELS_ :clap clap: (in the same tune as _AIR-BALL_).Should be an interesting game, though. I covered the UNLV-Kent State game for the Journal-World and the Rebels looked _good_. The Jayhawks are better, but they better not sleepwalk through Saturday’s game, or UNLV will bite them in the kisser.**12:20 p.m.** – Among those in attendance: KU football coach **Mark Mangino** and former UNLV star **Larry Johnson**.Among those not in attendance: A Portland State miracle.**9:10 a.m.** – Happy NCAA Tournament day.Seriously, I wrote a paper when I was in 8th grade in my English class. The assignment was to come up with a new holiday and write why it should be celebrated nationally.Well, I had three. The first Thursday of the NCAA Tournament, the first Friday of the NCAA Tournament, and Opening Day for Major League Baseball.I got an A on the paper because it was a masterpiece. Here are a couple of stories to tide you over before the early tip, outside of the [gobs of stories][1] we have done ourselves:**Jim Beseda, Oregonian**: No Portland State players were alive when Al Michaels famously said, “Do you believe in miracles?” (Neither was I, ha!). But here’s [the blueprint][2] on how to pull one off today.**Associated Press**: Portland State [ is excited,][3] no doubt about it.That’s all I’ll have for now. Game time is looming. Chat with you later. Oh yeah, and check out [ the great NCAASports.com][4] early and often.
