I thought I was going to become a crime scene.Just as I was crossing an intersection heading toward Barry University, a police siren wailed to my right. I slammed on the brakes and sent Nick Krug, our photographer, darn near through the windshield.A Miami-Dade police officer stopped in the intersection on his motorcycle and signaled for us to stop and stay put. Then, to our right, about six other cops on motorcycles passed through. A couple of police cars followed.”What on Earth is this?” I thought, wondering where [O.J. Simpson][1] was.The answer: KU football, being treated like kings for the Jan. 3 Orange Bowl. The Jayhawks had a motorcade normally reserved for President Bush just to go to practice on Friday. Behind the police cars were three team buses. Behind the buses were more Miami-Dade police. All had lights flashing, many had sirens blaring. It was surreal. The team pulled into Barry University at around 10:30 a.m. Friday morning. They changed into practice gear and went to work, the first practice they’ve had since Monday back in freezing Lawrence (for the record, it was 78 degrees and a little muggy in Miami on Friday).A couple of interesting items from the workout, which the media were only allowed to attend for the first 30 minutes:**- All of the injured players** from the Missouri game – Anthony Collins, James McClinton, Patrick Resby and Kendrick Harper – were accounted for and looked fine out there. We’ve gotten no official word on their status, but we’ll find out closer to game time. I imagine all will be available.**- If Joe Mortensen wasn’t wearing** No. 8 on his white jersey, there’s no way I would have recognized him. No way. Mortensen normally is clean-shaven with a bald head. For the Orange Bowl, he has a grizzly beard and a mohawk. It is awesome. He looks like a complete madman.**- All the players flying in** on their own on Thursday (there were more than 60) arrived safely and on time.**- The plan for Friday evening** includes a team dinner and a trip to the bowling alley. A post-practice beach party is planned for Saturday. [1]: http://nitro.biosci.arizona.edu/courses/EEB195-2007/Lecture07/pics/oj.bronco.jpg
