Malik Newman on Graham’s struggles vs. ISU: ‘We… put him on our backs for a change’

AMES, Iowa — Devonte’ Graham has been an iron man for KU basketball, playing 40 minutes in more than half of the Big 12 contests.

On a day he went just 3 for 16 from the floor, though, Malik Newman (17 points) and the Jayhawks were able to pick him up.

“We rely on him to do a lot of things,” Newman said. “We were able to put him on our backs for a change.”

While Graham eventually reached double-figures in scoring, it was Udoka Azubuike (19 points), Newman and Lagerald Vick (16) who led the team in points.

Asked about the last member of that list — Vick, who had been in a slump since the start of Big 12 play — Newman praised the junior’s energy level in the win.

“I think his attitude has always been good,” Newman said. “The last week or so, I think it’s just been outstanding.”
