CB Shepherd stands out for KU in loss at Duke

By Staff     Sep 13, 2014

**1. JaCorey Shepherd:** Did a strong job of covering leading receiver Jamison Crowder, who caught just two passes for 14 yards.

**2. Ben Heeney:** Led the team with 15 tackles.

**3. De’Andre Mann:** Averaged 5.4 yards per carry for 65 rushing yards to go with a 36-yard reception.

**4. Corey Avery:** Looked shifty running the ball for 87 yards on 16 carries (5.4 average), but missed a block on the play on which quarterback Montell Cozart was smoked so hard he didn’t re-enter the game.

**5. Trevor Pardula:** Averaged 51.8 yards on eight punts with a long of 72 yards.

**6. Tony Pierson:** Caught two passes for 17 yards, but was standing alone in the flat all day, providing Cozart with a safety valve he didn’t use.

**7. Nick Harwell:** Consistently got open on short-to-medium routes, and at least once on a deep route, but was not spotted or was missed by Cozart. Caught two passes for nine yards.

**8. Joe Dineen:** Ran the ball hard in his first college action, gaining 28 yards on six carries.

**9. Anthony “Fish” Smithson:** Had four tackles and was active on special teams. On the down side, he was flagged for a person foul for a horse-collar tackle.

**10. Dexter McDonald:** Was picked on early, but grew better at covering 6-foot-6 receiver Issac Blakeney as the game progressed.
