The final member of a trio of Desert Edge High School players who signed with Kansas in the 2024 class bade farewell to KU on Tuesday afternoon.
Cornerback Aundre Gibson announced in a post on X that he plans to enter the transfer portal, following in the footsteps of past high school and college teammates Jon Jon Kamara (who announced his intentions on Dec. 12) and DJ Warner (who left KU last year for SMU and is now headed back into the portal).
“First I want to express gratitude to the Lord and Savior for this incredible opportunity I have had as a Jayhawk,” Gibson wrote in his post. “I also want to express gratitude to Coach (Lance) Leipold and the entire KU community. Thank you KU for 2 amazing years. Thank you to all of the teammates who made this place feel special.”
The 5-foot-10, 188-pound cornerback from Goodyear, Arizona, was part of a newfound pipeline to Arizona briefly established by former KU assistant Jordan Peterson, who is now the defensive coordinator at Kansas State. Gibson was a three-star prospect out of Desert Edge who chose KU over Arizona, Arizona State, Iowa State, Oregon and more.
As Gibson’s fellow corners in the 2024 class, Austin Alexander and Jalen Todd, ascended on the depth chart, Gibson never quite found his way to playing time. He did not see the field during a redshirt season in 2024 and then appeared in one game in 2025.
He now becomes the second cornerback intending to transfer away from the Jayhawks in this portal window after Jameel Croft Jr., and he will have three years left to play. To this point, KU has retained Alexander, Todd, Syeed Gibbs, Jahlil Hurley, Jacoby Davis and Chris McCorkle with Trey Brown and Robert Reddick signed for the 2026 class.
