Quick recap: Kansas suffers 83-60 loss to TCU in Allen Fieldhouse

The TCU Horned Frogs were in complete control from start to finish en route to a 83-60 upset win over the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday in Allen Fieldhouse. It marked TCU’s first-ever win in Lawrence while also handing KU its second-straight defeat.

With the win, TCU improves to 15-4 on the year and 4-3 in Big 12 play. Kansas is now 16-3 overall and 5-2 in league action after losing to both Kansas State and TCU this past week.

The Horned Frogs, who were coming off a road loss to West Virginia, only trailed for 37 seconds on Saturday and led by as many as 22 in the first half. They managed to control the game for 39-plus minutes in a variety of different ways, too

TCU, which ranked 348th in the country in 3-point percentage entering the weekend, hit four 3-pointers by the second media timeout. The Horned Frogs finished 8-for-15 from long range, which marked the most triples they buried in a Big 12 game this season.

When shots weren’t falling as much in the second half, TCU relied on its physicality and effort on the defensive end to keep its cushion. Kansas went 9-for-28 in the second half, including 2-of-10 from long range.

The Jayhawks cut the deficit to 10 by the intermission, but their inability to find any sort of offensive rhythm over the final 20 minutes kept them from getting any closer. Jalen Wilson paced Kansas in a losing effort with 30 points, marking his second consecutive 30-point performance.

Wilson went 11-for-21 from the floor, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Yet no other Jayhawk was able to get going to help Wilson, as Kevin McCullar Jr. was the lone teammate to finish in double figures by adding 10 points.

It isn’t time to push the panic button yet, as the Jayhawks lost consecutive league games last year before eventually winning the national title. That stretch even included TCU, as Kansas lost to Baylor and TCU in late February and early March before flipping a switch at the right time.

But Bill Self will have his hands full with a daunting schedule to close out January. And this team desperately needs to find a second scorer to help out Wilson moving forward.

Kansas will travel to Baylor at 8 p.m. Monday.
