Former Kansas men’s basketball star Sherron Collins will not be returning as head coach of the Free State boys basketball program next season, the school confirmed on Monday.

Collins reportedly is set to become the next head boys basketball coach at Oak Park High in Kansas City, Mo.

Free State athletic director Jered Shaw confirmed that Collins had resigned from the Free State program to pursue another opportunity.

Shaw told the Journal-World the search for the program’s next boys’ basketball coach is underway.

“Free State wishes Sherron nothing but the best and thanks him for his time with Free State,” Shaw told the Journal-World.

The move comes nearly two weeks since Free State assistant Cornelius Edwards left the boys basketball program, per his Twitter account. Edwards served at Free State for six years, including Collins’ sole season with the program.

Free State finished 11-10 (5-3 in league play) in its 2022-23 campaign, falling to an eighth-seeded Junction City team 65-42 in the first round of the Class 6A west substate playoff in Junction City. The Firebirds finished No. 9 in the Class 6A West region and fifth in the Sunflower League.

Collins, a Chicago native, is a two-time All-American (2009, 2010), and a two-time All-Big 12 honoree playing a key role in Kansas’ 2008 national title run. Kansas retired Collins’ jersey in 2018.
