By Staff     Feb 1, 2026

Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.

For the week of Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, the selections are John Swabik and Aaliyah Moore.

John Swabik, men’s track and field

A redshirt senior from Sherman, New York, who transferred in from Colorado, Swabik didn’t take long to make an impact on the KU program. In his first multi event as a Jayhawk, he set a school record, meet record and facility record in the heptathlon at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational in Manhattan with a score of 5,864, headlined by a first-place finish in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 2.03 meters.

Aaliyah Moore, women’s track and field

The graduate distance runner from Georgetown, Guyana, a longtime standout for the Jayhawks, had another of KU’s top performances in Manhattan. She ran the 1,000-meter race in two minutes, 46.49 seconds, which was second at the event but set both a school record and a Guyanese national record. She already owned the Guyanese mile record.
