Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Nov. 3-9, the selections are Dakyus Brinkley and Lydia Viets.
Dakyus Brinkley, football
On consecutive plays of Saturday’s game against Arizona, Brinkley recorded the first sack of his career and then split another one with D.J. Withers. The redshirt freshman from Katy, Texas, played a key rotational role on the defensive line as KU totaled five sacks in its 24-20 loss to the Wildcats.
Lydia Viets, soccer
The freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma, chose an ideal moment for the first goal of her career. She connected for the game-winner, off a deflection, in KU’s 2-1 upset victory over Colorado in the Big 12 semifinal on Wednesday.
