Despite another strong pitching performance by Brynn Minor and sound defense, Kansas dropped the series opening game to No. 11 Texas, 3-0, at Arrocha Ballpark.
The Jayhawks were provided only a few opportunities to plate runs against Texas starting pitcher Miranda Elish, who finished the game with 10 strikeouts while allowing only two hits.
In the third inning, KU had its first opportunity to plate runs after two errors by the Texas defense put runners on the corners. One batter later Brittany Jackson reached on a fielder’s choice that didn’t result in an out, which loaded the bases.
With only one out in the inning, Elish tallied two strikeouts to finish out the inning and control the Kansas attack.
The Jayhawks put runners on first and second after another Texas error and walk one inning later. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, but Kansas was unable to plate the runners after another strikeout ended the inning.
The Longhorns netted another run in the sixth inning off Kansas starter Brynn Minor, who pitched six innings and allowed eight hits with three earned runs.
The second game is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday.
