Behind a pair of four-run innings, the Kansas baseball team recorded an 11-7 win at Furman in the season opener Friday night at Latham Stadium.
The Jayhawks (21-19) scored four runs in the third and four runs in the fifth to erase an early deficit. KU recorded 17 hits as a team, while Furman (17-25) scored seven runs off nine hits and took a 1-0 advantage in the first.
Brett Vosik delivered the signature blow with a grand slam in the top of the third. Rudy Karre, Jaxx Groshans and Nolan Metcalf all tallied RBI singles in the fifth. Metcalf led the way with five hits, while Skyler Messinger netted four hits. Karre and Groshans each tallied two hits as well.
Ryan Zeferjahn was credited with the win after allowing six runs off seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out nine batters and walked three to improve to 4-2 on the year.
The second game is slated for 3 p.m. Saturday.
