KU volleyball swept at Baylor

By J-W Staff Report     Oct 27, 2018

The Kansas volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match on Saturday in Waco, Texas, falling to Baylor 25-21, 25-21, 25-17.

Kansas (13-7, 6-3 Big 12) couldn’t find an answer for a potent Baylor (14-7, 6-4 Big 12) offense that recorded a .296 hitting percentage in Saturday’s sweep. The Bears also won the battle at the net, with 43 kills and six blocks while out-digging the Jayhawks 43-39.

Junior outside hitter Ashley Smith led KU with a 13-kill effort and a .346 hitting percentage. Jada Burse also turned in a double-digit kill performance (12), while freshman defensive specialist Audri Suter led both teams with a career-high 14 digs.

“We can’t confuse effort and execution,” KU coach Ray Bechard said after the loss. “Those two have to go hand and hand. We have some kids trying hard but still at the same time effort and execution have to go together. We were out of sorts a lot today.”

KU is now just 1-3 since knocking off perennial power Texas at home on Oct. 10 and will play at West Virginia on Wednesday.

NOTES

• The Jayhawks have been swept in two straight contests for the first time since the 2017 season, when they lost in straight sets to then-No. 23 Baylor (Nov. 11) and at then-No. 2 Texas (Nov. 15).

• The Jayhawks now stand alone in second place in the Big 12 standings.

• Baylor recorded six blocks compared to Kansas’ four, marking the second straight match the Jayhawks were out-blocked by their opponent, something that hadn’t happened since Sep. 1 at then-No. 16 Kentucky (12.5-9).

• KU’s four blocks were the fewest by a KU team since Nov. 15, 2017 at Texas, when it recorded three
