When Carter Stanley makes his second straight start for the University of Kansas football team this coming Saturday at No. 9 West Virginia, the redshirt junior quarterback won’t be splitting any time with backup Miles Kendrick.

KU head coach David Beaty said Monday morning during his time slot on the Big 12 coaches media teleconference that Kendrick, who suffered a shoulder injury during a loss at Baylor on Sept. 22, remains unavailable.

“It looks like it’s one of those things where, hopefully, we’ll have him available after the bye week,” Beaty said, referencing the Jayhawks’ forthcoming weekend off, following the trip to WVU.

Knowing that Kendrick, a dual-threat sophomore who appeared in each of KU’s first four games of the season, won’t be available this week, Beaty said, made it difficult for the coach to address whether Kendrick will continue to play semi-regular snaps off the bench once he is cleared to return.

“But I know this: We’re always going to have competition at every place that we have in our building. And I also know this: It is a very, very rough conference,” Beaty said of the need to have multiple game-ready QBs.

As an example, KU’s coach then referenced the injury suffered by Texas Tech freshman quarterback Alan Bowman in the Red Raiders’ loss to the Mountaineers this past weekend. Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury revealed Sunday that Bowman endured a partially collapsed lung as a result of a hit.

“I sure hope the kid’s OK,” Beaty said. “But it was a really tough hit. And you’ve got to have more than one, man, because it is a violent, violent conference, because we’ve got such good players. There’s big bodies and they’re really fast. Physics — something’s got to give.”

A 5-foot-10, 200-pound sophomore from Morgan Hill, Calif., Kendrick completed 11 of 19 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown in four appearances, before missing KU’s loss to Oklahoma State. He also has rushed for 47 yards and a TD on 16 carries — Kendrick has been sacked once, for an 11-yard loss.

Bender didn’t play at all in KU’s 48-28 loss to the Cowboys, while new starter Stanley threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

“We’ve got to have all those guys ready, and one of the things I was most proud of was watching Peyton handle himself and handle Carter staying in the game the other day,” Beaty said, noting Stanley showed similar patience while barely playing in KU’s first four games.

According to Beaty, Stanley wasn’t “ready to go” as a potential starter when the season began, but the QB understood that and kept working.

“When his turn came, was he going to be ready? And I think he really has done a nice job of preparing,” Beaty added, “and hopefully he’ll continue to do that and he’ll keep giving us production.”

Beaty hopes Kendrick will be healthy enough to be available for KU’s Oct. 20 game at Texas Tech.
