Kansas senior Daniel Sutton caught fire on the back nine of the first day of competition at the men’s golf NCAA Stockton Regional and carried the Jayhawks into a second-place standing, three strokes behind Iowa State and one stroke ahead of Alabama, the nation’s seventh-ranked team.
Sutton birdied the final four holes and five of his last six to shoot a 5-under 67, tied with Stanford’s Brandon Wu and UC Davis’ Ryan Han for low round of the day.
KU sophomore Andy Spencer matched Sutton’s birdie total of six and is tied for eighth with a 69. Charlie Hillier shot 72, Harry Hillier 73 and Daniel Hudson 74.
“We were very steady all day,” head coach Jamie Bermel said after his team finished 7-under.
Five teams advance from each of the six regionals advance to the NCAA finals. The three-round regional resumes today and concludes Wednesday.
