Stillwater, Okla. ? Kansas University senior Maria Belen Ludueña won in singles and doubles Friday to advance at the Central tennis regionals.
Ludueña was the only KU player to reach the third round in singles. She teamed with junior Maria Jose Cardona to win in the opening round of doubles.
In singles, Ludueña defeated Arkansas State’s Tamara Slijepceic, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Arkansas’ Yang Pang, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles, Ludueña and Cardona defeated Nebraska’s Mackenna Maddox and Lisa Anderson, 8-3.
The KU doubles team of freshmen Smith Hinton and Madison Harrison also advanced by edging Oklahoma’s Ann Pepper and Malene Stripp, 8-7.
“Today we had some ups and downs,” KU coach Todd Chapman said. “As a team, I felt like we left some wins out on the court in singles and doubles. We need to work on competing throughout the match instead of in spurts. Individually, we had some outstanding performances. Maria Belen Ludueña had a great day, and it’s good to see she is still competing in both singles and doubles.”
