Don’t worry. Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium will soon be track-less — even though the removal process didn’t begin on Tuesday.

Start on the minor facelift to KU’s football home got delayed one day, KU associate athletics director for public affairs Jim Marchiony said. The crew charged with completing the roughly six-week-long project couldn’t finish its previous job on time due to rainy weather, slightly pushing back the timetable for Memorial.

Equipment for the stadium’s makeover arrived Tuesday, and KU officials told the Journal-World engineers began preparing for the track demolition process by locating utilities and cutting seams in the turf.

The highly anticipated upgrade to the football stadium now is scheduled to begin Wednesday morning.

“I think it’s great that people are interested,” Marchiony said. “This is something that many KU football fans have been anxious to see happen. We appreciate the interest in it.”

Memorial Stadium had served as KU’s home since 1921. The project, paid for by an anonymous donor, will cost roughly $500,000.
