KU women beat South Carolina, 75-69, return to Sweet 16

By Staff Reports     Mar 25, 2013

South Carolina guard Sancheon White (20) is blocked by Kansas forward Carolyn Davis (21) and Kansas guard Monica Engelman in the first half of a second-round game of the women's NCAA college basketball tournament on Monday, March 25, 2013, in Boulder. Colo.

? There they go again.

Proving that last year’s run to the Sweet 16 was no fluke, Kansas University’s women’s basketball team has repeated the feat this year.

Senior Monica Engelman scored a career-high 27 points, and KU became just the second No. 12 seed to advance to the Round of 16 with a 75-69 victory over fourth-seeded South Carolina on Monday night.

Angel Goodrich added 20 points for the Jayhawks (20-13), a tournament bubble team that joined San Francisco in 1996 as the only No. 12 seeds to follow up a win in the opening round with another in the second.

Fourth-seeded South Carolina (25-8) was denied in its quest for its 26th win, which would have been the program’s most since joining the Southeastern Conference in 1991-92.

The Jayhawks will face the winner of tonight’s game between No. 1-seeded Notre Dame (32-1) and No. 9 Iowa (21-12) in the Round of 16 on Sunday in Norfolk, Va.
