The Kansas University volleyball team kicked off its 2012 campaign with its annual Crimson and Blue match, Saturday at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center.
The Jayhawks split into two squads — Crimson and Blue — and played in front of supporters, including nearly 20 former KU players and coaches.
The Blue team, led by assistant coach Laura Kuhn, defeated head coach Ray Bechard’s Crimson team, 3-1.
“Everybody was a little anxious and there were some unforced errors, but that’s why we do this — to get some of those things out of the way,” Bechard said. “I thought we played very hard. There were a lot of good rallies, which is a sign that we’re playing hard, but that also says something about our execution, too. We did see some solid things today.”
Junior Catherine Carmichael and sophomore Sara McClinton led all players with 17 total kills while splitting time between the two squads.
KU will travel to the Arkansas Tournament for its first matches of the season next weekend. The Jayhawks open against Northwestern State at 4:30 p.m. on Friday in Fayetteville, Ark.
