In a ceremony at its medical center campus Thursday, Kansas University announced a firm date for applying to become a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.
Linda Weiss, chairwoman of the cancer centers program at the NCI, and Karen Kelly, deputy director of the KU Cancer Center, said the application would be submitted on Sept. 25, 2011.
Weiss said KU should know whether they would receive the designation in spring 2012. About 20 academic medical centers are trying to attain the designation.
The NCI usually grants three of the designations per year.
